A video from 2015 has gone viral, showing a black anti-police activist accepting an invitation from Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona to participate in police use of force simulation training sessions to better understand the stresses and split-second decisions police officers are faced with on a daily basis.

Reverend Jarrett Maupin, who organized #BlackLivesMatter protests following the officer-involved shooting in Ferguson, participated in three scenarios, each one followed by a discussion of when he sensed a threat and why he chose to draw his weapon....Maupin stated that the training scenarios changed his way of thinking, saying, “I didn’t understand how important compliance was… people need to comply with the orders of law enforcement officers, for their own safety.”

I don't expect your hardcore BLM protester to gain a new perspective were they to experience on some level the training police experience, but I wonder what sort of effect going through a bit of this training would have on your average high schooler. Would they gain a new perspective? Or be more immune to not being skewed by their leftist professors?

There is a middle ground for all of this “hate”, “fear”, and “insanity”.

We don’t have to tear each other and this nation apart over issues that should be addressed and agreed upon by a reasonable population.

I’m glad this guy found the courage to try living in the shoes of the other side.

Perhaps it would be an interesting experiment to recruit some BLM types for the police and police training. Let them prove how serious they are.

You are so worried about police in your black communities? How will you deal with the drug-dealer selling to kids? What will you do when the local businesses “your people” need complain to you about constant shoplifting and threats? How are you going to stop drive-by shootings, especially when no on in the hood will give you information?

Have at it, boys and girls.

Maupin stated that the training scenarios changed his way of thinking, saying, “I didn’t understand how important compliance was… people need to comply with the orders of law enforcement officers, for their own safety.”

This needs to be clarified to say "... for their own [and mutual] safety." Yes there are bad cops and they can be protected too far and too long by their brotherhood, but good cops can be caught by bad situations. A civilian does best for all by being cooperative and saving his powder for when it does some good. Arguing a traffic stop beyond clarification leads to undesirable outcomes.

Still, it is good to see that a BLM leader is open to reason!

I haven’t heard any political leaders mention complying with police directions. Resisting arrest is a crime.

“We don’t have to tear each other and this nation apart over issues that should be addressed and agreed upon by a reasonable population.”

Of course that’s sensible, but the problem now is that a substantial portion of the population has no desire to be reasonable.

I went to the FBI Citizen’s Academy. There was a local news anchor in the class with me. During a simulated shoot/don’t shoot drill he (justifiably) shot the bad guy till his gun was empty. I told him later that he should think about that when the press reports how many shots police fire in a shoot out. Unfortunately I don’t think in his opinion I rose to the level of him listening to me.

Plenty of armchair experts that would probably benefit from similar simulations from their police departments. Unless you’ve actually been confronted with situations like that, you have no idea how you would respond.

the wild card in policing that no one ever mentions...is the 2nd amendment...300 million guns here...being a cop in the United States is a little more “nuanced” to say the least.

I guess what I was trying to say is that there are reasonable folks who can see the other side of the coin.

The lawless folks will need to be dealt with swiftly regardless.
