The Enthusiasm Gap: Comparing Trump's and Biden's On-Line Merchandise Stores

Truth be told, enthusiasm is actually a stronger indicator of election victory than the ridiculous fake polls that the media puts out there.

Enthusiasm cannot be precisely measured, but you can feel it in the excitement of the rally crowd in Tulsa and the pre-rally video clips of people waiting in line and merchants selling Trump gear and apparel.

The devil is in the details.  The difference between Trump and Biden is especially stark in the promotion and publicity area. It really helps when the candidate being sold—President — Donald J. Trump — is a tremendous performer.

But it’s much more than that.  The Trump political operation is blowing the Guy in the Basement away in every channel: digital advertising, rallies, public exposure, website, social media, and so much more.

Promotion in any sphere of life is a function of three things RPI – Repetition, Penetration, Impact.  You must Repeat your message several times to Penetrate the mind, so you will have the right Impact -- getting enough people to show up and vote.

So how about comparing Trump and Biden in one channel alone – merchandise for sale on their website.  The images below tell the story:

• Trump’s sheer number of apparel and hat items for sale is ten times that of Biden.  While Biden offers a few boring "Joe 2020" shirts nobody wants to wear, the Trump team sells hats and apparel that enable a buyer to choose a message they are proud to wear — an issue they care about.

• Biden's website sells apparel items with no one modeling the clothes!  Trump, meanwhile, mixes it up with real-life Americans from diverse groups and ages.  We see smiling and attractive girls and handsome guys in natural settings.  But it's presented in a low key way: not too commercial.  In fact, one of the models, Gail Wilson, is deputy chairman of the Black Voices for Trump campaign.

• Trump's store tells a story about why people are supporting Trump.  You get messages about what Trump voters care about: supporting the police, the impeachment farce, and even putting Americans back in space.  There's even a few joke t-shirts such as the Bull-Schiff one.

• Boil it all down, Trump's merchandise store positions him as an winner whose popular with all kinds of Americans.  Biden's store positions him as a boring old fuddy-duddy sitting in a basement listening to old phonograph records, then nodding his head and falling into a restful sleep.
