Contact-tracing apps have been hailed as a crucial tool in the battle against the coronavirus. But as states rush to release their own home-baked versions, not everything has gone to plan.
In late April, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum announced the release of Care19. The app, the result of a partnership between the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) and developer ProudCrowd, aims to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Unfortunately for everyone pinning their hopes on a quick technological fix, Care19 doesn't always work as advertised.
"There are cases where we did not set expectations properly," admitted Care19 developer Tim Brookins over email.
With a coronavirus vaccine estimated to be 12 to 18 months away, tech giants and elected officials are placing their hope in contact-tracing apps. Designed to track individuals' movement and record when they cross others' paths, a successful contract-tracing app privacy concerns aside could theoretically help health officials alert people who have been exposed to the virus, who could then be told to self-isolate.
Even so, Care19 presents itself as the 21st century version of a tried-and-true public health technique that gained prominence during the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
"Care19 uses state-of-the-art GPS location data to help trace the places you have visited," reads the Care19 App Store description. "If you test positive for COVID-19, with your permission, this anonymous and confidential data can be shared with the Department of Health to more efficiently identify others with whom you were in contact with."

Karen resents your negativity.
If you are willing to download this app you might as well put your collar and chain on now.
Bump.
I Love this Country :)
And if you trust a government agency with your anonymous and confidential data we'll forward your name and address to an Everglades realtor.
ya, right....no thanks.
My cell phone is not surgically implanted....
These people (government) can’t make an app that works, can’t make a website that works (Obamacare sites in Maryland, Oregon, etc.), but the left wants them running my healthcare and the conspiracy theorists claim they’re secretly plotting mind control?
The only thing I fear when it comes to government is how much of my money they’re going to take and waste. Lazy and incompetent.
If a pollster calls me, I give incorrect and misleading answers (not on purpose of course, ha). I wonder how many of these app users do the same.
Civilian band GPS isn’t nearly precise enough for this. That’s why the APIs Google and Apple put in place use bluetooth. The significantly shorter range, along with other features within the protocol, can actually give you much useful distance data between devices (and therefore people).
I understand that the contact tracing equipment doesn’t work when we’re bunched together, but it works just fine when we’re apart 6 feet.
So, how would the “offenders” be told to self-isolate? Eh? Would the app report the “offender” to the gestapo who would then descend on the location of the “offender”, given in detail by GPS?
And why was this developed if Covid19 is going to be going away in a few months? Perhaps the authorities know something we don’t.
And why was there such a rush to develop this app? Why no corresponding rush to develop apps that really help people, like one that warns you when you are near a high crime area, and beeps and displays a map of the area. (We know the answer.)
ILLINOIS LOOKING FOR CONTACT TRACERS
(05/21/20)INN
Illinois will soon hire contact tracers to interview COVID-19 patients and identify people who may have been exposed to the virus.
Governor J.B. Pritzker calls contact tracing crucial to Illinoiss efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Anyone interested in becoming a contact tracer can fill out the form on the Illinois health departments website. Names of people interested will be forwarded to local health departments, which will do the hiring.
I have no idea how those lyrics relate here, LOL
Well I guess just the “Hey 19” part. LOL!
