Did they notify customers in advance of the surcharge,
so they could “take their leave”?

I don’t care if they do it but it better well be known up front or it comes out of your “tip”.

$1 for a $14.26 meal. It depends as each person. My suggestion is not to add that surcharge on the receipt and just raise prices by $1 because you just piss of people. You know the saying “what you dont know wont hurt you”.

Just bump up the prices a little. While some people will realize why this exists and be understanding, others will assume the restaurant is taking advantage of the pandemic. One of those cases where it’s best not to go the surcharge route.

My salon tells me they plan to add $20.00 to each customer’s bill as hair is much longer after this time and if one needed color, they’d have to mix up more costing the salon more $$$, thus besides being denied their services from our KS governor, who is stringing this out another week or two, our salon owners are attempting to make it up with each customer!

Knowing how this stuff goes by past experiences, prices will not return to their past pricing structure (just raised prices last January in addition to this - and my stylist informed me she was going to go ahead and retire anyway.)

If you get tested and don’t have Covid, can you get your surcharge back?

MI businesses need to just raise their prices. All businesses are going to have to go that route with the inflation that is coming with the super monetizing of the debt to pay for this lock down. Recode the sales tax to read on the bill to read “GRETCHEN WHITMER’S TAX” just to remind the customer the fee she extracts to keep her thumb on your life.

The restaurants doing this have argued it’s less costly than constantly reprinting menus as food prices and shortages fluctuate.
I’ve been trying to leave more generous tips, so if I saw a surcharge I might cut back on that a little, don’t think it’s come up yet.

I have no problem with this unless he springs it on the customers after they’ve already eaten and had no way of knowing about it. Don’t like it? Go somewhere else.

Why be so obvious? Why not just raise the prices a bit to cover increased overhead?

I have been tipping much bigger values when we have been ordering out. It is just the right thing to do.

Stupid public! These businesses have been closed, but still had to pay their bills. They have to limit the number of people they can allow in and perform all of the safe sanitation for the clients. If you can’t pay a surcharge, DON’T GO! They are struggling to stay open. Don’t complain there’s no place to go when you get out. Lame brains.

It’s astonishing that people are surprised by this. I’m fine with it. It’s either stay in business or we lose choices of restaurants. Just raising prices means you also have to reprint menus, then reprint again when things get back to normal. And yes, competition will drive prices back down as possible. So a surcharge is the obvious option - but you should have a sign upon entering, don’t let it be a surprise.

I was expecting it. Maybe these people should just eat at home for the time being, its cheaper. Eating out right now should be more expensive, and I’ll tip more too. For the lucky ones like me that have continued to get paid and work from home, I’ve saved a load from cooking at home. When I can start dining out again I was going to spend a little more anyway. Those that can do this should, it’s the way to get this economy back on track.

If you’re not letting them know until you give them the bill that’s dishonest. If it’s open from the start not a problem.

I was in an Ocean State Job Lots store in MA today. The place was absolutely packed, no one 6 feet apart and angry customers. They imposed a 2% fee on to the bill which they said was to compensate their employees. It was posted all over the store.
The natives were restless and the guy behind me told everyone that they could thank China for what’s going on. A nurse behind him said nearly every patient that has died in her hospital was listed as Covid death even if they had terminal cancer. People are reaching the breaking point. When this store is the highlight of the day it’s pretty sad.
Unfortunately, I predict that Charlie Baker will move the goal post further on Monday.

There is a dentist in the Richmond area who just yesterday attempted to add a $10.00 Covid surcharge. They have regained their senses and have backed down.

I have zero patience for misbehavior due to ignorance. Zero patience!

So, pay attention. This is what results from Big Government running our lives. If you think all of this is a result of Covid, and the heavy hand is a result, you need to get a clue. Welcome to 1984.
