Only the market knows.
They are entertainers, they are paid for what they can bring in. Folks buy the tickets, t-shirts and beer, TV pays for the marketing opportunity, advertisers pay for the marketing, that is the market at work.
Blame the owners.
Exactly, they are entertainers who use their body as physical exercise to win games and championships.

Are athletes overpaid?
Is the Pope Catholic?
Oh wait... never mind.

Okay! Does the bear -?
Athletes are like Corporate CEOs. You pay an athlete based on what he delivers to your team. Can someone else cause the change in events that he can? If so, fire your guy and hire the new guy. CEOs just the same. But this incessant whining about overpaying a person is ridiculous. If the writer could deliver similar results he/she wouldn’t be a muckraking writer!
Who says the ticket prices are too high? The free market sets the ticket prices. If they are too high, then the owners lose money. But apparently they aren’t too high, because there is a market at that price, and many sporting events (when held) are sold out.
As for the team owners... no team owners, then no players and no games. Thats how the world works.
That’s all it is. What the market will bear.
Once people start blathering on about how a teacher only makes this much, a doctor only makes this much, blah blah blah...
Once they go down that road, that is The Road to Serfdom. Because that means that you as an individual don’t get to set your own value or worth.
YOU SURRENDER THAT TO OTHERS.
And in the end, there will be no peace, because someone ALWAYS makes more than someone else. ALWAYS.
I don’t have a problem with people thinking dumb ass athletes are overpaid. I think they are overpaid.
But I do have a problem with people who want to set the value of what OTHER PEOPLE are worth. I call them Leftists.
And they are a cancer on humanity.
“Athletes are extremely overpaid, considering that their careers do not, arguably, contribute to society in a meaningful way.”
That is the Soviet or Maoist viewpoint. In America, they are paid that much because of the amount of money they generate for the team owner. The team owner makes even more.
All of these owners could hire someone for much less easily. They DON’T because they know how much more these athletes will generate FOR them.
But cool agitprop.
They aren’t “paid”. They negotiate a fraction of the sales revenue they help generate.
I’d reply “Is the pope catholic?” but I really don’t believe he is so going to the backup of “Does a bear shit in the woods?”. The answer is obvious.
What bothers me is they equate money to knowledge about other things in the world that they are clueless about.
We worship athletes and actors/actresses. Most are good at one thing and don't have the least bit of knowledge outside their work world.
Yep so do misic artists and movie stars. I say they love liberalism so much, consfiscate thier money and give it firemen, and 1st care responders and cops. Lets see how long it takes them to become conservative!
Very overpaid. I would be fine if professional sports takes a serious hit because of the virus.
I don’t care to hear these clowns political comments. I wouldn’t mind seeing them brought back down to earth a little.

This should be the only answer on a Conservative forum.
we work for them....
“They are paid what the market will bear. Its called the free market and capitalism.”
Bingo! We have a winner.
I never support professional sports. They don’t get a dime from me, but I fully support sports fans giving over their own money of their own free will.
The women’s soccer equal pay feminazis are insane.
I hope the nba doesn’t start up....I am so sick of their schtick, although there are a few players that seem to be high quality individuals.
MUST. HAVE. DEMIGOD.
