Are athletes overpaid?
Wildcat Voice ^ | May 2018 | Amia Nettles

Cristiano Ronaldo. LeBron James. Lionel Messi. These are a few examples of athletes that make close to 40 million dollars a year. Athletes are extremely overpaid, considering that their careers do not, arguably, contribute to society in a meaningful way. This opinion is shared by 59% of the population, according to a Zeitgeist survey.

The average annual salary for a doctor is around $188,000, while the average salary for an NBA player is around $5 million. Similarly, firefighters only make around $46,000 a year, while MLB players make about $4 million a year. Doctors obtain high levels of education and save people’s lives, and firefighters risk their own lives on a daily basis, yet neither make half of what athletes make to play a sport on TV.

They are paid what the market will bear. It’s called the free market and capitalism.

The writer cherry picks a few athletes pay and compares it to average doctors pay. It is statistical fraud. My guess is if we average all athletic salary including all sports and all paid participants the average would be lower than doctors.

True and this is being overlooked in this discussion.

No one is disputing the doctor save lives and how important that is to society. But athletes would not make millions if not for the big TV contracts and for fans paying big dollars to buy tickets to the games. The athletes are generating the revenue from which they get paid the big bucks.

Isn’t a good deal of their pay tied to ticket sales, broadcasting rights, merchandising sales, etc. Which is why for example ‘superstar’ athletes will often be paid significantly more than average athletes, and also why average athletes of superstar teams will be paid more than average athletes of average teams. Needless to say that superstar athletes of superstar teams will be paid the most.

Doctors, nurses and teachers do MUCH more than athletes could ever hope to, but the issue there is that hundreds of thousands of people will never pay money to watch a group of nurses tend to the sick week after week, will never buy a jersey or hat with their favorite doctor pasted on it, and you’ll never see a cable company pay Billions for the rights to broadcast teachers taking children through phonics for the next decade.

Athletes are not overpaid. It’s the market. They get paid based on revenues they bring in.

Oh wait... never mind.

Take yer pick.

A. Yes! Athletes are overpaid. Way overpaid. It’s obvious.
B. No! If someone is willing to pay you $1000 per hour to throw a ball, then that’s exactly what you are worth.
C. I really want to say A. But since I believe in the free market, I’ve got to go with B.

Overpaid and dumb. I’ve heard many of them complaining about starting league play. I hope they get their wish and can’t wait for the shock when they are not paid. Produce or starve.

That is true in a sense.

It is called the free market.

We the consumers like to be entertained.

We like the entertainment.

Think about what entertainment in the world is today.

Playing a chess game, thinking of a creative poem is not entertaining.

We like to see 3-pointers. We like to see touchdowns. We like to see pitching duels and homeruns.

That will be the case even more since sports are canceled.

The athletes are a market commodity.

A team owner hires them, or doesn’t. If the owner is to stay in business, the owner must sell enough tickets/commercials/etc to pay the athlete. If he doesn’t, he goes out of business, and the athlete doesn’t get paid. Then we would know the athlete wasn’t worth the salary.

But, the owner sells the tickets, makes enough money to stay in business...voila, the athlete is worth his salary.

All the rest is commiePinko comparable value BS.

They're overpaid. Ticket prices are too high. My cable bill is too much. And there are too many commercials during a game.

But given the last three, I would rather the players get the money than the team owners. No one went to a basketball game to see Jerry Reinsdorf or bought a pair of Air Reinsdorf shoes from Nike.

How many doctors are there?

Now how many star athletes out there that people will pay to see?

Are they overpaid? I would not pay them that much but the people who do are making a great deal of money on their talent.

If people quit paying to see them their salary drops to zero.

Yes, they are overpaid, BUT they are paid to put bottoms on chairs and in front of television sets, where beer, chips, automobiles, and video games are advertised.

The day somebody PAYS to watch a teacher teach, or a doctor lance a boil, or any other person do their job, we can talk about how these other people are underpaid.
