E.J. Dionne thinks they very well might, and for once I agree with him. So, apparently, do some Republican Senators. (I hope Im wrong. If I am, it wont be the first time I have underestimated President Trump and the American public.)
Lets start with the presidential race. Come November, the U.S. will likely be in a depression. Deaths from the coronavirus in the U.S. might well be in the 125,000-150,000 range. A new wave of the virus might be adding to the toll.
If President Trump wins reelection under circumstances like these, he will prove himself the unsurpassed political genius he thinks he is.
It is true that Trump wont be facing a high quality opponent. However, Joe Biden isnt disliked or distrusted the way Hillary Clinton is. And the pandemic will give him an excuse to run a campaign that doesnt fully expose his deficiencies.

The Concern is strong in this one. Smells like wishful thinking.
Good analysis. Anything is possible in November.
Rat threats to the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Amendments will bring GOP voters out in large numbers.
Oh please. More Doom and Gloom.
If the left wins in November, the feckless republicans have nobody else to blame but themselves.
President Trump has shown them the way forward. They prefer to cower as usual.
Smells like wishful thinking.
If parents have to keep their kids out of school this fall, Im not seeing how that helps the incumbent party.
Tara Reade issue hurt biden. Many people aren’t as stupid as we think. Maybe 45% are. When a man doesn’t show his face in public for months on end people put two and two together.
And this talk about not having debates is ridiculous. There will be one and people will see what groping Joe is all about.
Democrats think they have a winning issue giving $2,000 a month to everyone 16 or over. I hope the majority see that that would destroy the country
Sorry, but I never agree with E. J. Dionne about anything.
Absolutely
LOL. Sounds exactly like what the born loser GOPe was saying in 2016. How did that turn out?
Since I left the Democrat cult in 2008 Ive noticed with every election the constant defeatism of people on this side of the political aisle. Enough already.
Too early to tell right now. History would tend against them losing it all but the GOP is running against an economic and employment disaster, $6 trillion deficit, and Covid-19 is still in the picture. Those unknowns make it hard to predict November.
EJ was wrong on 2016...why believe him now?
I would expect to see campaign adds listing Red states with Republican governors that have returned to normal. And lists of Blue states with Democrat governors that are still cowering and suffering — “As president, I have urged all states to re-open. However some Democrat governors would rather control your lives. Now is your chance to leave the Democrats and vote for your freedom.”
The Great Depression lasted for more than 10 years. Without a Democrat in the White House this will not turn into a depression like in the 1930’s.
They don't. Far too many see money from paycheck to paycheck. A vast majority in this country are economically illiterate.
Don’t forget that the only plans the Dems had was to keep the shutdown and panicdemic going full blast until fall or at least well into summer. To the surprise of no one with a brain it isn’t working too well for them
Unfortunately, when it comes to preserving, protecting and defending the Constitution President Trump is cowering right along with them ... so far, anyway.
Democrats are gong to be wiped out, not the GOP.
DemCommie= Rule or ruin
