Retired players being hurt by baseball’s coronavirus hiatus
New York Post ^ | April 17, 2020 | Ken Davidoff

The dominoes moved swiftly — instantaneously, really — upon the shutdown’s execution.

“When Major League Baseball postponed the start of its season on Thursday, March 12, my phone rang like the ‘Sell!’ scene in the movie ‘Trading Places,’ ” Andrew Levy wrote in a text message, “with just about every client either postponing or canceling the player appearances that had been scheduled.”

Without games or group get-togethers, there sure as heck wasn’t a need for your favorite retired ballplayer to liven up an event. Hence this contingent of guys who make a living off their name long after their final appearance in uniform has, like so many others, taken a hit from the coronavirus.

Tough shit! Who really cares?

I'm sick of these damn, irrelevant sob stories, I have a life and I want to live it free. Let me go play ball with my buddies, stay out of my fricken life!

Al Kaline, Mr. Tiger, died a couple weeks ago. He was most recently a special adviser to Tiger GM Al Avila. Had the season not been postponed, Al would have been in Lakeland to work with the young players. Kirk Gibson said Kaline taught him everything he knows. Kaline was a spectacular fielder in right for the Tigers for a long time.

So I am suppose to feel sorry for millionaires who cannot make paid appearances anymore? Your typical player most likely moved onto jobs like coaching, insurance or selling cars. It is only the famous players who can still make paid appearances years after retirement. If they did not save during their high paying days it is on them.

Exactly right. The famous players made big money, more than enough to live on for the rest of their lives. They should have managed it better.

I saw Jose Canseco a few years ago signing autographs at a minor league ballpark for about an hour and he did not appear to be enjoying it. He made $45 million during his career and declared bankruptcy in 2012.

I hope Americans awake from their brainwashing and realize just how meaningless spectator sports is. All the wasted hours you could have been improving yourself, working out, reading a good book, fixing your home. The time of worshipping your false gods should come to an end.

But you have to remember, athletes are entertainers.

That is why they are paid so much.

Yes.

A lot of athletes’ lost their name and their power after retiring and then they become broke.
