More to the point is to admit that prohibition laws never work, because otherwise (in the absence of solely that law) honest people have honest reasons for demanding the contraband item.

Sincere question: by “well-defined” laws, do you include existing gun bans? Or do you mean “mala in se” laws against basic crimes like murder, mayhem, threat, and property destruction?
Laws against mala in se crimes that have actual victims are generally well-received by citizens and enforceable. Laws against “precursor crimes” and “paperwork crimes” that have no actual victims are generally oppressive ineffective. Their failure leads to the imposition of follow-on laws of the same type, equally ineffective, until your rights are eroded to the point that you are forbidden to do things that actually harm nobody.
