The high end number of estimated deaths comes from a 2011 textbook called “The American Economy: How It Works And How It Doesn’t,” by Wade L. Thomas and Robert B. Carson. Citing Bluestone, Harrison and Baker’s book, “The Causes and Consequences of Economic Dislocation,” they conclude that for every one percentage point increase in the unemployment rate, there are 37,000 deaths — the largest single source coming from heart attacks, presumably from stress, but another 1,000 from suicides and another 650 from homicides. The rest are not categorized, likely due to a lack of underlying data.

It is hard to tell where this is going to end up since there has never been a time when so much unemployment has occurred so quickly. A lot of people probably believe jobs will come back quickly once shutdowns end, but I don't know. Everyone I know is retired or has a job that they do not fear losing. I am not in touch with how the other half feels, so to speak.

It doesn’t matter whether the shutdown ends or not.

People have to feel reasonably safe or they will not go out to bars, restaurants, sporting events, etc. Orders or no orders.

This is why it is so important to get effective treatments sooner rather than later and to make masks, gloves and hand sanitizer widely available to the public ASAP.

So they can feel reasonably safe.

Its also why the misleader is attacking the Trump pills non-stop. They want the public to be afraid for as long as possible.

It is really disconcerting to me how many Trump supporters I know who saw all along how the Deep State has been trying to take him down starting with Russiagate on through Ukrainegate are freaking out over this virus. They live in violent fear of having to go to the grocery store.

For example, ln the limited instance when stepping out for groceries, we see grocery stores limiting supermarket access to fewer and fewer patrons to maintain the distance required under current social distancing protocol. Once inside, each aisle of the grocery store has arrows dictating the direction for the flow of traffic. Registers limit the distance between patrons . Diana points out that certain locations (LA, DC)_deny access to anyone not wearing a mask.

In the linked video, the host, Jason Goodman asks, how long before they limit access to any building or business unless patrons are willing to have their hands scanned for a chip which identifies vaccination records?

They are desperate and scared and many are not going to get their jobs back and they know it. Expect suicides to increase dramatically, along with domestic violence.

The non-stop doom and gloom has even permeated FR so much that I no longer recognize it. Even when the economy is restarted, many will not get work as the non-stop gloom and doomers continue with their crusade to scarge monger the populace.

Also, as our rights are being stripped away WILLINGLY by most, we have in effect, given the next Democrat President the way to seize total control of our lives forever.

Trump, thank god, clearly sees this threat and is fighting it, but the next person will most likely not be so benevolent. Anyone, who can’t see this is an absolute fool of the highest order. The Democrats are begging Trump to seize control of the whole economy (in effect, the country) and are criticizing him for not doing so.

Wait till its their turn. We have illnesses every year and they already have it ready and willing to go when they are in charge again. Total fascism!

I don't think this is a fair assessment at all.

Many people have compromised health issues or someone in their family does. Bringing home this virus is a death sentence for these people.

Most companies have stayed open using remote work. (hooray for IT).

But 20% or more of the economy requires face to face interaction. Effective medicines and plenty of PPE for the public will largely solve this issue.

President Trump has 2 battles on his hands. This disease and the economy. He must win both of them and he must control the virus first, then the economy. While also battling the corrupt media and corrupt opposition party.

Ignoring the virus and keeping the economy going would have caused an economic collapse anyway. He would have been blamed for both in that instance.

The Depression we have ignited will see the state governments clinging to much of the power they have assumed for this “crisis.” The Federal Bureaucracy will do the same. And if, as seems likely, the economy does not come roaring back before the election, we will have a Democrat n the WH and majorities in Congress and a declared Climate Emergency to follow the template of the Virus Emergency. That is then Game Over. The Democratunists win permanently.

Most of those dying from coronavirus are elderly and/or in bad health already. Without coronavirus, most of them would die in the next couple months anyway.

Think of it this way. Smoking tobacco statistically cuts x months off the end of your life. Drinking alcohol, eating too much sugar, etc cut y months off the end of your life.

Coronavirus death is no different. It just cuts x months of the end of your life....statistically. Whether the statistics are a bell curve or a skewed curve is only a minor detail.
