Vanity: Once the All Clear is Given, How can Trump counter Governors Keeping their States Closed
Vanity | 4/6/2020 | USAFA92

My first vanity is quite awhile. Let’s assume that in the coming 2-3 weeks, Trump gives the all clear that its time to get back to work. We already have several governors just looking for any reason to keep things closed. Inslee in WA just shut the schools down for the rest of year. Murphy in NJ is talking well into May before he opens things up. Cuomo will probably be a bit more flexible in NY but not much. Northam has VA closed until June. Wolf has PA closed indefinitely. DeWine has Ohio until May.

Point is, Trump can give the all clear but the governors can choose to keep their lockdowns continuing to hurt the economy. In an ironic way, it’s the states rights argument that conservatives have always championed. Of course, Democrats corrupt it for their own purposes. So, thoughts on how this opens back up uniformly and quickly to get the economy rolling again.

Just as Trump says he does not want to be authoritative contrary to our Federal structure in shut downs, he won’t do so in relaxing the shut downs. Once he sounds a call for all state and local authorities to relax Stay at Home order, those states that do so will prompt citizens in other states to pressure their Governments.

As openings begin it will be unstoppable.

Once we are given the all-clear the politics at the state level will take care of itself.....

Certainly!

There is no all clear. All the ‘flatten the curves’ are flawed. When you flatten the curve, the curve is extended. By flattening the curve, we have extended the amount of time the virus will be infecting people.

Agreed. The rationale for flattening the curve was so that hospitals would not be overwhelmed. If they are not, time to open up on a state by state basis. The president should not be responsible. If the blue state governors want a depression in their state, they can remain closed.

Cut off all CV aid dollars. That will get their minds straight.

The rationale for flattening the curve was so that hospitals would not be overwhelmed.

That's the only rationale I accept. By April 30, our hospitals should be prepared for a 2nd wave.

If Crozier didn’t think this would be the result, he was “too naive or too stupid to be a commanding officer of a ship like this.”

The ‘Bully Pulpit” works wonders in cases like this.

Yep. Our Governor (aka Asterisk Inslee) is not giving us any information on what the requirements are for getting back to normal. He just cancelled school for the rest of the school year! Makes me think that he is going to keep us under “house arrest” for the next few months. Ridiculous.

Why isn’t Boeing considered an essential business? How many military aircraft depend on Boeing parts?

I am in California and we have a crazed democrat governor who I suspect will not relinquish power easily.

I need everything to re-open asap as I need a barber and they are all closed.... If I cannot find a barber then maybe a dog grooming service will do. I also can get my nails clipped : )

“Vanity: Once the All Clear is Given, How can Trump counter Governors Keeping their States Closed”

President Trump won’t have to do a damn thing: the citizens of closed states will first DEMAND that their fool governors open the states, and if the governors refuse, then there will be mass civil disobedience, and the governors will then find out how truly powerless they really are ...

Bingo!

They will end this as soon as the Federal teeth, they suckle off, goes dry.

Right now, they are in a patronage relationship and don’t have to write checks they can’t cash.

The old standby works every time - Interstate Commerce. It would work here too.

I’d guess the Justice department could whip out the ol trusty “Commerce Clause”, for which they have used many a preposterous argument to gain final regulatory control of a wide range of industries. It was the commerce clause that enabled them to control the entire drug industries. Same with the gun industry. So, I think a commerce clause argument, franed against the intent and words of the Commerce Clause case, would and should be an easy win. An order from the US Supreme Court, indicating that the Governors are violating the commerce clause, would cause federal intervention if the states did not return to commerce. But, time is going to be working against these states, and their politicians, that decide to sit on the sidelines too long.

If governors refuse to get their states going again, I know Americans generally have short memory spans, but hurting their state economies will hurt them more than Trump. Especially if other states, which open back up, return to relative economic normalcy and begin to recover.

Those who have lost their jobs won’t forget if their governor makes the situation worse by preventing businesses from opening again. Families who have lost family due to COVID, and couldn’t attend funerals, won’t forget either.

That would be the plan for most DemocRAT governors. Keep it shutdown so more pain is inflicted while they project blame on the Trumpster. Do not see it happening as this is backfiring on the DemocRATS because Trumpsters numbers keep going up even when they fudge them down.
