New Haven residents criticize Yale’s municipal contributions during coronavirus pandemic

Residents of New Haven, Connecticut, criticized Yale University in a recent city council meeting, claiming that the school needs to step up its financial obligation to the city as well as offer its campus up in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic...Yale reportedly fails to “adequately contribute to New Haven,” some argued, a reality that has apparently been exacerbated by the coronavirus outbreak. Residents “reiterat[ed] long-standing calls for an increased financial contribution from Yale,” with one citizen claiming that the city is “in a deeper and more widespread sense of emergency” than before.

Maybe Yale can raise tuition to cover this. I would not feel the least bit sorry for their students.

I’ve thought for a long while that all those leftist weisenheimers on Campus should be able to put their PC intellectual societal solutions into action in New Haven.

It’s a nearby laboratory where they should have demonstrated their fixes by now.

Yale has a 13 foot wall around its campus in the middle of New Haven. Probably they are against a border wall, though.

I can remember (the 40's and 50's) when it was a great city of both education and manufacturing... by the mid 60's it had started to become a thriving operations center for the CPUSA...

There is no wall around Yale. Elm Street goes right through Yale as does York Street. Only “Old Campus” which is for freshmen only has a well around it. New Haven is a lovely little Bridgeport without Yale... And Bridgeport! What a city.

There is indeed a wall around the dormitory area area of Yale. It is approximately 13 feet high. All the outside doors of the dormitories are locked. There is one entrance to the dormitory areas, and 24/7 security is posted there, and can monitor who comes in and who goes out. I walked through this area last summer, and I know what I saw.

New Haven is a lovely city and a cool place. I really liked the people I met there. Too bad the politicians they elected ran the state into the ground and drove the state bankrupt. Many of the people I met there wanted to move away.

To summarize, yes a street runs right through Yale, but the dorm area of Yale has a 13 foot wall. Impressive, with all gates locked, except for the entrance to the quadrangle where security is posted. Makes sense for Yale. Also, makes sense for USA.

I believe you are referring to “Old Campus.” Yale’s Old Campus is where freshman are housed, and there are three main gates, plus Vanderbilt gate which is no longer used.

After Freshman year Yalies move into their colleges - though there are always a few exceptions.

The other colleges, also protected by gates, are scattered around.

“Cross Campus,” Yale’s main green, is open to all.

Many of Yale’s buildings, including the residential colleges (JE, Davenport, Saybrook, Morse, Stiles, Hall of Graduate Studies, etc.,) are just ‘around’ Elm, York, College, Chapel streets.
