If you look at the Princeton bookstore in town you’ll see freshman students are being taught Jane Eyre - a book I studied in NJ as a junior in high school. The dumbing down continues. The truly brilliant Scott Fitzgerald quit Princeton in 1918 because the curriculum was so difficult. Now Toni Morrison is too tough for lib arts students.
While this actually makes some sense, let’s not pretend that the students aren’t being just a bit opportunistic. Meanwhile, some tuition refunds might be demanded in some places.
I think it would be financially better for the schools to give incompletes and have the students re-take the classes next fall. There’s no jobs out there anyway for these folks, so another semester won’t kill them.

Any student who is paying his own tuition should get this. All others snowflakes can suck it up.
I agree with them to some extent. And their argument is even more true with respect to all the elementary schools doing distance learning right now. Some kids get a lot of parental help at home while others get none. That’s certainly true during the regular school year with things like homework, but at least what happens in the classroom is a pretty level playing field. When it’s 100% home, not sure the regular grading system continues to make a lot of sense.

BS. Our daughter has worked her a$$ off this semester, including during the interim of “online classes.” These p*ssies merely want a free grade... I will be very angry if Pass/Fail occurs. Most likely, come on, be real, the whiners have not demonstrated their merit and merely expect a passing grade.

What does a Pass grade translate to on the 4.0 scale?
What’s next — everyone should just get a Pass grade due cowering over covid-19?
So much would have to change, including how you assess student learning and what assignments you give.

Once again, I call BS.
A lot, if not most, of university students’ coursework assignments and assessments have already been online for years.
WTH have you been?
I have taught college courses, both online courses and in-person courses. I geared my lesson plans, assignments, exercises, and testing to the format.
A course that is designed as an in-person course cannot be switched in the middle of a semester to an online course and have the same quality.
My MOST hated class was Statistics 1.

I, too, have taught college courses, both online and in person. And yes, the class requirements can be adapted, depending on the flexibility of the professor/instructor.
And students must “jump through the hoops,” so to speak to EARN their grades.
So long as a student meets the requirements of my syllbus, we are good to go with A, B, C, D, F. Forget pass/fail. One either passes or fails.
One in-person courses, say in English can be moved to online kinda easy. Here, read this write up a paper on a topic of this. I have no idea how you can say you learned in a course like Chemistry, Biology or anything that has a lab where you lean by doing experiments and making observations.
So a course that is built around lab reports and laboratory experiments designed to help a student grasp scientific principles is really going to suddenly translate fine into an online format?
A public speaking class in which a student has to now perform in front of a camera on their computer instead of a live audience?
A seminar class that depends on class discussion? How easy is it going to be for all students to log in at the same time everyday in the middle of a crisis when they might have to take one of the 100k jobs at Amazon or Wal-Mart that have popped up as the result of this shamdemic in order to help the family because a parent lost a job?
