The NCAA should attempt the difficult task of conducting its basketball tournaments in empty arenas. We need the positive energy of March Madness to offset the negative energy connected to the COVID-19 virus. March Madness can provide something to cheer about.
The entertainment industry has a long history of entertaining military troops on the front lines to help the morale of the troops. Television has made it possible for troops on the front lines of distant battle fields to watch major entertainment events like the Super Bowl.
.We are all "troops" on a battle field a killer virus has invaded. We need entertainers to boost our morale. Unfortunately we tend to have widely different entertainment preferences. March Madness and the Super Bowl have a relatively broad appeal.
March Madness can bring us together socially even if we are physically separate. Physical separation can lead to social isolation and depression which can increase susceptibility to illness. March Madness can give people something to talk about on their phones when many places are closed.
The NCAA could reduce the field to 32 teams and spread the opening round over four days so people could watch all opening round games.
The military could transport the teams to reduce virus contact.
After hearing that NBA players had it, the college players were part of the driving force to cancel.
...and then the teams can fight to the death at the end so they don’t spread the contamination from the arena. Cool!
You don’t want them laying all over each other, sweating and coughing.
Basketball gets nasty under the basket. Not exactly a hygienic sport.
Yeah there’s a bad idea. Remember it’s not just the game, it’s the practice and coaching. One sick player turns into a sick team, then they take it home, then grampa dies. Leave it alone folks.
I understand cancelling baseball, which stilll makes most money at the gate. But bring back NCAA!!!!

Oh, I just love sports addicts! Doesn’t make any difference at all that we’re facing what the Chinese, Italians, Iranians, Germans at al have - just have to have their sports!
Tell you what: find a ball, go to a park nearby and play your heart out.

Italian population has a higher percentage of elderly, higher percentage of smokers, and a cultural facet of grandparents being visited often by grandchildren. A large Chinese population, in addition.
Iran - I think there is a significant Chinese population in/around Qom IIRC from what I have read here.
China actively tried hiding this for several weeks before they couldn’t anymore.
Not sure about the Germans, other than large population of immigrants.

College teams are the NBA minor league, the farm teams. If the pros can’t be subjected to the possibility of danger, there ain’t no way their up & coming replacements are going to give it a whirl.
