A look back at swine flu: 8 facts about the world's last pandemic in 2009

The World Health Organization on March 11 declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, the first such declaration in 11 years.

Here's a look back on the 2009 swine flu pandemic with eight key facts from the CDC:

1. The flu strain responsible for the outbreak — influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 — was first detected in America in April 2009.

2. The strain represented a unique combination of influenza viruses never before seen in humans or animals.

3. The virus quickly spread globally, primarily affecting children and adults under 65 who lacked immunity to H1N1.

4. The WHO declared the swine flu outbreak a pandemic on June 11, 2009.

5. Between April 12, 2009, and April 10, 2010, the CDC estimates swine flu caused 60.8 million illnesses, 273,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S.

6. On Oct. 5, 2009, the U.S. began administering a newly approved H1N1 vaccine to select Americans, with vaccination coverage expanding nationwide by that December.

7. WHO declared an end to the pandemic on Aug. 10, 2010.

8. Globally, an estimated 151,700 to 575,400 people died from swine flu in the first year of the pandemic.

For reference, the COVID-19 pandemic has sickened 1,323 Americans and killed 38, as of March 12. More than 127,00 cases and 4,700 deaths have been reported globally.

Fifty-nine death in the US so far; the MSM loves a good crisis because the impeachment thing has disappeared. Now they want the US shutdown over this.

Notice that they had a vaccine in 6 months. Hmmm... impossible, everyone here says it will take at least a year an a half.

A Democrat was President then, so the H1N1 pandemic was part of the “new normal.”

Difference between H1N1 and corona 19 is the swine flu hit the younger groups harder and this one hits us oldsters. Lethality is probably higher for the 19 therefore. I’m willing to bet that the death toll in the US will be less than the swine flu, as I don’t think we’ll hit 60 million infections. My bet is covid 19 deaths will be less than 18,000 this time next year.$100 to FR if I’m wrong.

The flu kills about 36,000 people a year in the United States, according to the CDC, though the range varies greatly each year. Most deaths are caused by complications from the flu.

80% of the symptoms from this new coronavirus flu are considered moderate for most people and the prognosis for recovery from it is considered good unless you have a weakened immune system from other conditions.

We have a long way to go from 40 to 60 deaths so far in the US to pass the average 36,000 deaths annually in the past from the regular flu.

Everybody needs to calm down, take precautions if you are in contact with lots of people, like washing your hands often and keeping your unwashed hands off your face, mouth, eyes, nose, etc.

People recover from the flu all the time and this will be no different. Taking a bunch of pharmaceuticals will not help. It's a virus and antibiotics won't touch it. Hydrate with at least 2 quarts of filtered or mineral water a day, sleep as much as you can day and night and keep the temperature in your mouth elevated by drinking lots of hot lemon water and maybe taking echinacea health supplements for the cold and flu. Eat hot soups to stay nourished. You can recover in 10 days using this formula.

Shutting entire countries down, like Italy, will not stop the spread of this virus. Lots of people will lose their jobs because businesses will fold if they shut down for too long. Economies will crash. But people will still get the flu.

The secret is personal precautions to keep from contracting it to begin with and then disciplined treatment if you should get it. Mass hysteria and panic will not make it better.

But it is just getting started. This is different. It is much more infectious, bla, bla, bla and bla.

Do I have to add the sarcasm tag?

I may die from this crap but at least I’d like to die in peace.
