NBCs medical drama New Amsterdam had an unusual diagnosis this Tuesday in the episode, Sabbath.
After Dr. Helen Sharpe finds her 13-year-old patient Cephas has four benign tumors growing in his stomach and that the boy has elevated levels of stress hormones, psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome determines the tumors were caused by racism. As the surgeon operates and removes the four tumors from Cephas, he warns the tumors could come back and might not be benign next time.
Iggy realizes Cephas feels isolated and threatened all the time after asking him a series of questions that measures a persons level of social resistance. He tells the boys mom Cephas feels Like everything he's earned can just be taken away. He's disenfranchised.
He tries to code the insurance billing paperwork with the diagnosis of racism, which gets a stern rebuke from Sandra Fall from billing. She tells him he coded the form like a Bernie Bro writing in their vote, but tells him to change the world after he changes the official billing codes.
Iggy refuses to change his diagnosis because it will actually hurt patients like Cephas.
He's proof that racism can cause life-threatening medical issues, and no one is doing anything about it because no one is tracking the data to prove it. And do you know why no one is tracking the data to prove it? - Because the ICD-10 doesn't have a diagnostic code for it. Iggy insists.

Nah! Aliens did it! That makes as much sense!
Doctor Iggy Frome should ask Jussie Smollett for the code. Im sure he has it at his fingertips
Hey kid, if you feel this way now, wait until you grow up, get a job and then are subjected to one of the "tax fairness" plans peddled by the Dem candidates for president. You're case will become terminal.
Excessive stress does cause a variety of medical issues - including being anxious and neurotic about non-existent or trivial things.
Even if the racism were present, it is the highly-trained anxiety that is the health issue, and the amount of racism would not pertain to the health-effects. It might actually be that the lack of actual racism could increase the anxiety effects.
I saw the headline and immediately thought the show was New Amsterdam. I tried watching it the first season, but it sucked badly. I’m surprised it’s still on.
What absolute idiocy. Maybe the tv actor would better off suiciding?
I’m pretty sure work stress due to incompetent upper management caused my cancer, but they sure didn’t code it that way.
I think the affects of liberalism caused by rhabdomyosarcoma. Even at the age of 3 they were raising by stress levels.
Maybe Iggy should ask his husband...or wife...or whatever he calls his male live-in companion.
Obama made me have all sorts of medical problems.
Like most network TV, just more woke propaganda. My wife enjoys watching some of the “medical drama” shows, and she works for a pharmaceutical company. In fact, she works for a huge international pharma company. Yes, BIG PHARMA (Gasp!). It’s funny to see her industry constantly portrayed as evil, heartless capitalists who would gladly kill thousands to make a few bucks. Every episode of every show includes social justice themes, be it racism, gay/trans agenda, gender, anti private insurance, anti-religion, wealth disparity, etc. Women, children and minorities are always hardest hi, all of the most brilliant doctors are women and minorities and virtually all of the villains, bigots and deeply flawed characters are white men.
And yes, I know there are plenty here who agree with these shows woke portrayal of big pharma...
If you have ever worked in customer support you will know what that is. :)
I cant wait for the episode where they drill a hole in a persons skull to let out the evil spirits that are causing their hiccups.
The kid should relax, hes too young to be worrying about marriage.
Yeah? Well....that's life.
This is a cartoon, right?
You talk about going over the top and pushing your propaganda this is it. Not enough we have so many serious diseases to deal with, now we have a new fictional one people will be asking their doctors about.
