N95 Masks Are Selling Out All Over The World As People Everywhere Panic About The Coronavirus Pandemic

I can’t remember ever seeing this much global panic about a virus. The bird flu outbreak that we witnessed a number of years ago definitely shook people up, and the ebola scare received a lot of attention for a short period of time, but this coronavirus pandemic is already on an entirely different level. Despite the fact that there is an impeachment trial happening in Washington right now, this pandemic has dominated headlines day after day, and many experts are warning that what we have seen so far is just the tip of the iceberg. It appears that this virus spreads very, very easily from person to person, and it is nothing like getting the cold or the flu. One leaked video from a hospital in Wuhan, China actually shows a victim “shaking uncontrollably” and “writhing all over”…

A helpless coronavirus victim is seen shaking uncontrollably on a hospital bed in China as the death toll in the county rises to 56.

The disturbing clip, which was uploaded on to Twitter, shows a woman holding the head of the patient as he or she appears to be having a fit under a blanket.

Others surrounding the trolley are wearing protective masks as the victim is seen writhing all over.

I have a crappy diet, eat food after it falls on the carpet, eat food that is marginally spoiled and smoke little cigars.

My blood is probably toxic to the virus.

I do the same AND drink a few glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon an evening to keep the arteries open. I’ll be the last to go.

30 year shelf life. Still good. 10 years to go on shelf life but probably good for 50+ years as basic nutrition... flavor just degrades a bit.

Right. Even fewer would do it correctly.

I used to work in a cleanroom. But I also remember learning the disrobing training for bird flu attire, back 5 years ago? A pain in the a$$. But, if it meant keeping all the fluids in your body, ya gotta try.

Five cases? I only have one N95 and one N99 from Amazon. A woman from Taiwan that I know said on Sunday Amazon was sold out and she went to Walgreens, Krogers and somewhere else. They were all sold out. She went to Sherwin and Williams and bought painter’s masks.

I think that was the paper that also talks about how you need a flu virus to reach a certain number of viruses in the air to be considered a large risk.

I believe it was anthrax that needed just a very small number -- i.e. a handful -- of spores to create the momentum for a meaningful infection in an organism. Other pathogens, like flu viruses and coronavirus, need a lot more of whatever the unit is (virion).

It stands to reason that someone like a clinician, who is going to be inches away from an active case, needs a "more perfect" protection than a person who might just pass an infected individual now and then on the street. Avoid closed areas, though.

I have a bunch of N95 masks from a few years ago, but was in Home Depot to pick up another box. The shelves were bare (Seattle area). One store was all out of vinegar, and the other had a few bottles. Both stores were out of hand sanitizer.

HD had a bunch of Clorax wipes still.

Costco had Clorax wipes, bleach, vinegar, rubbing achohol, Elderberry juice, Vitamin D3, hydrogen peroxide and rice and canned foods. A bit fewer after I left. The only thing I was low on at the house was the bleach - not sure how that happened. Unless I have it squirreled away somewhere.

My wife laughs at me, but not too much. She appreciates that I’m just trying to watch out for us and puts up with it! I try not to argue the point. One - she doesn’t need to be more anxious about things, and two - she hopefully will be right!

According to Steven Hatfield, viruses are in competition with each other. Similar to how different bacterial species compete. So the virus needs to overwhelm an infectious area to become the dominate virus. The king virus if you will. With the crown. There can only be one. Typically we hope it’s a benign king.

https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/topics/respirators/factsheets/respsars.html

Above is a CDC/NIOSH bulletin for healthcare workers.

handwashing
eye protection
N95 mask

This is for people coming in contact with patients. I am concerned with trying to re-use the disposable N95 mask. In the paper they mention putting a loose surgical mask over the N95 to help keep it clean.

I bought a UVC light that will kill viruses - so am thinking to use it on stuff like the mask, phone, keys, etc. The UVC light is dangerous to eyes and skin though - so will probably rig up a cardboard box with some aluminum foil inside. (I already have plenty of foil left over from all the hats I made!)

Hopefully this virus can be contained to China for the most part. And that it doesn’t get too bad there. But I really doubt it.

Oh - in that paper they said that for SARS, most people out in public that got it, got it by touching an object and then putting their hand near their face, drink, food, etc. The chances of getting it through the air is much less.

I’m not sure I want to take those chances.
