Time to Dust Off Survivalist Plans? (vanity)
(none) ^ | Jan 27, 2020 | BobL

Posted on 01/27/2020 5:09:43 AM PST by BobL

Back about a decade ago with the housing meltdown of 2008, followed by our lovely leader for the next 8 years, many of us started thinking about what life would be like after 'it' happened. Thankfully 'it' never happened. But one of our concerns was a pandemic, not just due to the direct suffering it could cause, but the indirect consequences, such as disruption of the food supply and possibly disruption of utilities.

On a disaster scale, I would rate this somewhat in the middle, with hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes being the easiest to deal with, since they're localized, and a large-scale nuclear war being the worst (followed pretty closely by a complete economic meltdown).

But since Trump got elected, I think some of us may have gotten a bit complacent (I certainly did). But now, with many thousands of people still arriving from Asia, and even most of China, and with an identified 'it', perhaps it's time to check our stocks of food, fuel, our water supply plans, and, of course, our Second Amendment compliance status.

Best of luck to all!

Depends on where you live.

I was once getting work done on my parents house in Northern VT. They were kidding me about my MA gun laws. I told them I was going to go up there and live off the land if the apocalypse arrived.

They laughed and said there would be nothing in the woods bigger than a mouse by the time I got there.

So much for the big guns. .22LR is the standard squirrel rifle ammo.

“A worse problem is defending it from the hoards of have-nots. A grave situation is being put in front of a firing squad after you were found guilty of anti-hoarding “

Neither of those should be reasons not to prep.

Life has a funny way of turning the tables on evil people.

My bet is some sniper will turn you to meatloaf before you ever get near anybody to harm them with evil intent.

As a matter of fact, I’ll pray for it.

“We’re all gonna die!“

—————————————————————————————————

Yep, every season it’s some new virus and we are told how bad it’s going to get, the debates about it begin and soon the over dramatized news cycle moves on to the next big crisis.

Just like trying to watch a weather forecast, nothing but drama when describing the same type of weather that happens every year.

I love how now the actual temperature isn’t enough we have the “it feels like -40......

Or

Today there’s a “heat advisory” be careful if you HAVE to work outside (you poor slave) yet it’s exactly the same as it is every year and yes you have to use good judgment to keep hydrated, you know like breathing, eating, etc.

Drama, drama, drama, drama............

Don’t worry the government will save us......and you will be thankful and give them all your money.

“Debating if I need to start prepping in case this virus goes full blown.”

We had a few relatives in the midwest and eastern states ask us since we live in the land of disasters, aka California, with year round disasters:. Fires, earthquakes, floods and ????.

What type of preparations should they think about. So we put this together yesterday as a semi joke. We got thank you’s back from many relatives and friends some good suggestions. Which we added.

With the modern curse of next day delivery of food, water, medicine and other necessary items, There are no basic inventories past a couple of days before outages.

My wife has 40 plus years of being an RN, and I can spell MBA.

Here is our modest prep plan for even Californians:

What, would happen if your community was basically shut down for 2-4 weeks due to a quarantine.

No one could leave or get into your community for 2-4 weeks.

What you and your family eat and drink

When would you have power failures and maybe natural gas shutoffs. Cooking might be impossible without power. Keeping food fresh and edible in refrigerators and freezers becomes a 24/7 challenge.

Living in California, besides our grab/go bags, we keep enough water and food for 2-3 weeks. Also, food that doesn’t have to be refrigerated or frozen.

Food that is in our combo refrig/freezer lasts for 2-4 days to a week if we get in and out quickly. The freezer on the bottom has frozen bottles of water on the top shelves. Food is still edible after a few days.

Our standing freezer with frozen water bottles on top inside shelf, has kept food frozen for 5-7 days with the get in and out quick action.

So, you eat your refrig food first, your freezer food next and then your non refrig/freezer food.

If this thing goes full viral, you need to have 2-4 weeks of food and water handy.

You, also, need to have 2-4 weeks of your important Rx medicines and that minimum for your daily otc meds. The same goes for tooth paste and similar items.

Keep at least a half tank of gasoline in your vehicles. Good luck with any solar vehicle that has to have its batteries charged to get out of your driveway.

Home and self defense needs to be considered.

Out of curiosity, is either of you an epidemiologist, or otherwise study/work in the infectious disease field?

Your smugness says you are neither.

Don't besmirch those who prepare for contingencies.

FYI one of the local police departments here quietly held a pandemic response table top exercise with the CDC late last week. I know the police chief and he is a very steady guy. They are taking this seriously.

While “panic” is not called for, you'd be wise to at least not dismiss the idea that a pandemic of a pneumonia-inducing virus could disrupt the economy.

This novel corona virus is not a population killer, but it is worrisome.

Again, I believe you should dial back your smugness and plan ahead a tad.

You people are idiots. Go ahead and live in the woods with a bunch of guns if that’s your great idea

People get on this planet for millennia

Do United States of America has been around for almost 300 years

People of been talking about the rapture revelation and the second coming says Jesus was hung on the cross and was risen from the grave

The bottom line is the doom and gloom type people the purveyors of nonsense and scare tactics and massive hysteria are as evil as Joseph Goebbels

My training includes disaster preparedness for nuclear, biological and chemical disasters. So perhaps I might have more than average knowledge of this subject. On the other hand, perhaps I am just as ignorant as the posters who like to call people smug because I chide the mob induced panic of folks who don’t know any better.

I agree with all you wrote.

Except, I would increase the weeks worth of meds. The places most affected right now are those where most of our meds are made. Supply will likely be disrupted. Plan accordingly.

Agreed. As it is possible to prep for any given situation.

Based on what I’ve read here and at some prepping sites years ago (TB2K being one) many people set themselves up for the “have-nots” and the firing squads based on their own ignorance, outright stupidity and religious beliefs.

I recall when I used to belong to TB2K arguing with those that do the “Christian thing”. Let’s say they have food for a 365 day situation. The Christian thing to do is to share it. Once you start sharing your stash dwindles down to a weeks worth at best.

Nice try.

And you’re still smug, apparently, and I wonder if you paid GOOD attention to the B portion of your NBC training. Military training on this is largely irrelevant.

And I am anything but ignorant on this topic.

The socio-economic impacts of this outbreak are the issue here smart guy. NOT the disease itself.

Have a nice day. Done here.

You bring up a good point. Good Luck with antibiotics, whose patents are off and generics are being purchased and dispensed via pharmacies.

I had a UTI infection in mid November. The clinic pharmacy did not have enough Bactrim/ Smx/Tmp for even 5 days of therapy. I ended up with another drug for 10 days, and the pharmacy had to divide that rx into 2 five day therapies due to a lack of inventory.

Later, I asked the urologist for a backup RX of Bactrim/ Smx/Tmp for 10 days of therapy. He only gave me an rx for 5 days. I joked that I could get more oxy from him than Bactrim. He said, “Yep”!

Later, I found out about the antibiotic shortages on my own.

I sent out a basic supply list when this news first hit.
This weekend some relatives and friends asked me to re send my list. Here is our basic list:

Pretty much if you’re prepared for a zombie apocalypse then you’re also prepared for potential and very real natural and man made calamities.

Our family is not Mormon but we have adopted Mormon guidelines on having a year’s supply of food on hand for an emergency. We also have blended various prepper ideas and ideas from FEMA to create a plan that best fits our family and our location.

We even have a plan to evacuate from the ranch within 60 minutes if we need to leave due to the Yellowstone supervolcano erupting. In that even we grab some basics hook up our trailers and head due north to Montana and maybe even Canada as fast as we can.

If anyone screws with our LDS neighbors during a crisis we’ll shoot them ourselves.

And if they’re lucky they’ll die because the survivors will be fed to our hogs.
