Against Tribal America: Racialism, from any side of the political spectrum, is a recipe for disaster.
City Journal ^ | January 9, 2020 | Joel Kotkin

Perhaps nothing so animates the progressive Left today as the notion of an increasingly race-conscious society, segregated by ethnic identity and dismissive of the traditional ideal of assimilation. If this seems ironic, it should—in the not-so-distant past, this was a position embraced by the reactionary Right, particularly in the Jim Crow South. Today, however, progressives support separate dorms for African-Americans and promote restricted “safe spaces” for minorities and other designated victim groups. Indeed, it’s hard to pick up the New York Times—even its arts, sports, or travel pages—without seeing race-based analysis and reportage. The Times’s racial obsession reached new intensity with the “1619 Project,” which overstates the role of slavery in American history and economic development.

This newly energized racial consciousness asserts that most white Americans are racist, even as roughly three in four Americans—including whites, Republicans, and independents—regard racial diversity as “very good” for the country. The proportion of Asian, African-American, and Hispanic college graduates has increased since 2000, even as the share of whites has dropped. As Coleman Hughes has observed, the incarceration rate for African-Americans, though much higher than those of other ethnic groups, dropped by 34 percent between 2001 and 2017—and more so among the young.

Despite these positive trends, American perceptions of racial amity have steadily worsened since Barack Obama’s second term in the White House. President Donald Trump and his sometimes-inflammatory tweets have contributed to this trend, but much blame also belongs to progressives’ racialist agenda. At one time, liberals saw integration and assimilation as critical to achieving a just society. Now, they too often embrace a worldview that defines individuals by race. Racialist intellectuals such as Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist, dismiss the notion of “color blindness,” insisting that any divergence in outcomes between groups reflects racist design.

Having your country flooded with rude, grasping foreigners is not conducive to amity.

demoKrats, liberals and the political left in this country, and much of the world, are reliant on racism, poverty and victimization in order for their ideology to survive...

There will always be racism in America as much do to the fact the race hustlers need racism to remain relevant...

And falsely accusing someone of racism is almost as bad as being a racist. Actually, it is as bad.

Just like falsely accusing someone of rape.

Both diminish the seriousness of act and create a cry-wolf situation where no one will believe it when it does actually happen. This hurts true victims of racism and rape.

Uh, the “tribalism” comes from the mass non-White immigration that idiots like Joel Kotkin cheerleaded for.

Back in the 80s he was positively euphoric about the Mexican inundation of Los Angeles.

Oh Boy! They’re all gonna assimilate and we’ll all be one big happy family!

As they were rioting and demonstrating in downtown LA screaming “this is our land! You got to LEAVE!”

Now he’s concerned? He helped cause the disaster.

Jim Crow South was not ‘reactionary Right’.

It was solid Democrat. The same party that founded the anti-Republican KKK and threatened voters as they still do today.

... reactionary Right, particularly in the Jim Crow South.

I lived in the Jim Crow South - all the racists were democrats... from George Wallace who stood in the school house door to stop black children from attending to Bull Conner with his hoses and dogs.

Robert Byrd - Senate Leader who Obama did the eulogy for - was a KKK recruiter and life long 'Jim Crow' democrat. So was the South Carolina Democrat Gov who put the Confederate Battle Flag on the State Flag in the 60's . ALL DEMOCRATS.

There are far worse things in the world than racism, so start with that stuff first.

As nouns the difference between racism and racialism is that racism is the belief that each race has distinct and intrinsic attributes while racialism is the belief in the existence and significance of racial categories.

A distinction without a difference.

” the “tribalism” comes from the mass non-White immigration that idiots like Joel Kotkin cheerleaded for.”

“Back in the 80s he was positively euphoric about the Mexican inundation of Los Angeles.”

You beat me to it.

Kotkin lived here in Southern California.

And yet somehow that liberal airhead missed “Viva La Raza” and every other open declaration of latino pride.

It’s not like they try to hide it.

Yeah. And now he’s decrying all the bad effects of the crap he thought was just peachy then.

Maybe his house got broken into by MS-13.

The old “conservative is a liberal who got mugged” gig.

Funny how progressive liberals like Kotkin sounded exactly like the No Borders Republicans and libertarians.

All of them predicted that the 3rd world immigration tsunami that they encouraged would make us into a paradise here in SoCal. More like paradise lost, thanks to them.

Even B-1 Bob Dornan of Rush Limbaugh fame used to sing that stupid song, right up to the day that Loretta Sanchez took away his Congressional seat by betting on the La Raza vote.

Even after we headed off the cliff here in SoCal I hoped others would learn from what happened here and the immigration flood would be stopped dead. Apparently not. It’s like watching the fall of Rome in real time.
