That’s a great explanation of how a missile takes down an aircraft. Learned something new today.

A+

No apology from the Mullahs?

Fatwa THEM. Fatwa them REAL good.

When we had frozen Iranian assets here in the USA before Obama released them, the victims of this downed Ukrainian flight would have had that money to claim damages from.

Now its bumpkiss.

Good thing Hunter Biden or John Kerry were not aboard!

Obama gave Iran the cash $150 billion, to shoot down passenger aircraft.

The Democrats are evil.

Iran is seeking that one big U.S. military hit, but instead is murdering hundreds of commercial passengers. Maybe they should read the instructions on the box before firing.

Agreed. To a military system in certain modes there are only two kinds of people - friendly military aircraft and everyone else. Just because a target is transmitting civilian codes doesn't mean it is a civilian - it could very well be a strike aircraft spoofing, trying to get close. So under certain circumstances air defenses will engage anything not positively ID'd as a friendly, ie. transmitting the codes of the day. Typically you'd like for the hostile parties to issue warnings "XYZ is an active war zone, any aircraft in our air-defense identification zone may be engaged...etc. etc." Basically, private/commercial aircraft stay out. In less than full-on hostilities things get more complicated. In that case, just because something isn't a friendly military aircraft, doesn't necessarily mean it is hostile (eg. it might be a Ukrainian airliner). Then you have to go to the trouble of tracking it, looking for hostile actions (attack runs, high G maneuvers, etc.) and/or contact it on the radio, warn it away from your AOR, or some such.

Or maybe you screw up, panic, and shoot. Or maybe you screw up, put the system in some automated mode where it is allowed to fire on anything not positively ID'd as friendly. ie. you've gone "weapons free" instead of "weapons tight." In that case the air defense computer of a mobile system (like the SA-15) probably cannot tell the difference between an airliner climbing out and a hostile attack aircraft pulling off a run on an adjacent unit - so it would engage.

Or, as someone else pointed out...Maybe you fire on purpose, to further escalate tensions. Or maybe there was someone or several someones on that aircraft that powerful people wanted taken out of play. It sounds horrific - kill nearly 200 people in order to remove one or two... But make no mistake, there are people in this world who would order that as casually as you or I would order a latte.

There were 66 Canadians (I would assume they were recent immigrants) on board including several university professors and their families. I do not know if they were pro the mullahs or against them. The well controlled ‘free’ press of Kanadahar has not reported on any political leanings of these professors. Also, AFAIK, no MSM Canadian reporters have talked about the possibility of a missile attack and all are treating it as merely a ‘crash’.

I posted this the morning after the missile attack:

You can bet your ass that, knowing there were going to be missile launches into Iraq, Iranian air defense batteries were placed on a “weapons free” status. Some moron(s) in the Iranian air defense corps, fearing an immediate retaliatory attack, were a little too trigger happy and unloaded on a “low-flying unidentified aircraft on an attack profile.”

You can also count on the fact that we know exactly what happened to that aircraft...

Suspicious it happened within hours of their missile launch. Methinks perhaps a deliberate hit, hoping the crash would be lost in the news cycle vs all that was going on. A Ukrainian airline. Let’s see who was on the passenger manifest. Perhaps some witnesses.

One needs to be a first- or second-world society to understand this. Islam has them stuck in the 8th century as a third-world nation.

Iran USED to be a modern, Westernized nation, under the Shah.

Multiple news reports have pictures of holes in the fuselage where the aluminum is bent inward. Thus shrapnel blowing holes from the outside of the plane.

Pictures of the downed aircraft show that the various shrapnel holes you are talking about.

With all those missiles flying around the sky, what kind of pilot would take off? Someone like Ray Charles??

And how about that Control Tower...WOW.

The second to last picture. The girl on the far right could be a twin of my wife in her high school/early twenties years. Separated at birth.

Yours is a very good description overall of the weapons capabilities and weapons effects of a SAM.

IMO a ManPAD is also capable of a kill in the airliner climb out envelope and the hit in that case would be in an engine, the IR source for the seeker.

Also there are several "loose cannon" factions in that part of the world. If it is a shootdown , it may not have been coordinated with Iranian command authorities.

The Ayatollahs saw all this and got cranky.

What a shame.

Maybe the answer is found by the names of those on board. The person who gave the intel to us, may have been on there, and the Mullahs found out, and shot the plane down.

I don’t think this was a mistake.

They absolutely could have done this “by accident”. The Patriot missile system has an “automatic mode” that will fire without the operator command.

The Iranians were expecting a possible strike by the USAF that night. They had their air defenses on the highest alert. Probably somebody at Tehran airport was supposed to hold departing flights on the ground and didn’t.

As JFK said during the Cuban Missile Crisis, “There’s always some dumb sonovabitch who doesn’t get The Word.”

Sure, accidents happen but Iran is in no way absolved from responsibility just because they did not mean to fire at the airplane.

New York Slimes, Washington Compost, UPI today are reporting the plane was turning back to the airport, but of course that can’t be verified without the black boxes.
