A couple dozen Iranian short range ballistic missiles were launched at 0120 am local - same time Suleimani was killed. These missiles were launched from Iran, and not attacks by proxies. Three bases targeted with the brunt directed at the Al Aid Assad airbase located about 100 miles west of Baghdad. Casualties reported but no nationalities yet. Note Iraqi military at the same bases. Iranian spokesmen warn against reprisals.
Numerous reports that US fighters in the air from UAE, and Turkey with some rumored from Saudi Arabia. This suggests that initial retaliation has begun.
The President is meeting with his security team.
Iran firing from its territory is a serious event. As I noted this opens up the whole country for targeting.

IRGC has announced the use of Qaim and Zolfaghar missiles In the attacks. The Qaim is a liquid fueled derivative of the good old scud. Zolfaghar is a smaller solid fueled missile

Iran launched 15 ballistic missiles into Iraq. 10 were able to hit Al-Asad AB, 1 was able to hit Erbil. 4 of the ballistic missiles failed . This is a lot less than Iran claims. Puzzling. Seems an underwhelming attack. Is Iran trying to let the US off the hook for retaliation by such a weak action?

Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched.
We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression.
NOTE - concluded. Did Iran blink? Beginning to look like it.

Another question to ask is :
Did Iran just reveal to itself and the world that its missile hardware is not optimum for a high tech / high volume war with US so Iran decided to call it a victory and go home?

Confirmation of no casualties. Some observers note it seems Iran almost purposely missed and ignored other more vulnerable targets. As I’ve noted in past posts, Iran is a rubber band stretched to near breaking. Harsh reality they may have realized is
1 they can’t win a tit for tat
2. President Trump not afraid to really hit hard and devastating.
Iranian media touting success - meeting their propaganda. The results of the attack gives US a chance to pause the cycle.
Forecast - Iran will resume what it has done in the past, utilize proxies to attack to give them cover. However that cover is stripped away so their position is more exposed. My guess is that the president will continue to hold Iran responsible for any attack.
