SACRAMENTO, Calif. Joe Fatula left the Bay Area in 2017 wanting to settle down in the mountains somewhere quiet. He chose Colfax, a small town rich with Gold Country history, and became mayor last year with the goal of boosting business on Main Street.
But his sanctuary turned apocalyptic in October. Every gas station, grocery store and restaurant closed due to massive power shutoffs as part of the state's efforts to avoid a major wildfire. The mayor found himself loaning out his personal pickup truck and RV, which have built-in generators, to the town's 2,000 residents as they scrambled to save food in their refrigerators, charge their phones and find a way to stay warm.
At all levels of government from state officials to small-town mayors California leaders are in uncharted territory, and scrambling to adjust their plans and operations to the realities of regular disruption. For now, their only answer to calamitous wildfires is shutting off power to millions of residents in advance, which residents now lament as a man-made disaster. Mike McGuire, the state senator representing the Santa Rosa area devastated by fires in 2017, said California is the canary in the coal mine" as climate change threatens to upend life across the world.
Residents in some of California's most bucolic settings are stuck figuring it out on their own, rich and poor, urban and rural alike. While Fatula navigated his working-class community with generators in his pickup, NBA star LeBron James was forced to flee his estate near Los Angeles in the middle of the night, "driving around with my family trying to get rooms," he said in a tweet.

The world? Only in California is the power getting shut off.
Glad we left “The Golden State” 22 years ago now. Friends and family still there are buying standby generators to try to keep their frozen and refrigerated foods and medicines from spoiling during extended power cuts. Hello Venezuela.
“Mike McGuire, the state senator representing the Santa Rosa area devastated by fires in 2017, said California is the canary in the coal mine” as climate change threatens to upend life across the world.”
It’s stupidity like this that upends our way of life!
Ouch,
Shots Fired!
.
So typical. Lebron James is too stupid to have a generator.
I was planning on leaving but it’s looking like no matter where you go you’ll have to stand your ground. Weather is a big factor in my comfort. You can’t beat it here.
Just blame it on climate change.
The real culprit is government.
Government limits the profits of the electric company. Forces the electric company to give away electricity to customers that cant pay. Limits the type, and locations of power plants the electric company can build.
All of these things mean that the electric company has less money with which to perform maintenance on power lines and to keep brush cut down around power lines.
It also means longer stretches of high-tension lines because the company has fewer power plants. Longer runs of transmission lines means more line heating and sag during high demand periods.
The real cause of these fires is government managing electric companies with legislation.
They went “green” and now use generators with little emissions controls for power.
The brilliance of socialism on display.
The obvious answer is UN taxation on US citizens to a global climate change fund, fines and assessments for carbon usage levied by international monitors from a beefed up Paris Treaty Accord, and of course, windmills and solar panels,.
Wrong, bud. The fires were a result of bad forest and power line management policies forced onto PG&E by ignoramuses like you. It has nothing to do with the natural process of climate change. It is all part of the larger scheme to reduce the standard of living, which seems to be all the rage among the dictatorial left these days.
Ignorance is a natural condition improved by observation. You have to work hard to remain stupid.
California is the canary in the coal mine” as climate change threatens to upend life across the world.
Wrong ^
California is the canary in the coal mine” as socialism threatens to upend life across the United States
Right ^
He is just using California’s neglect and nonsense rules to advance the Climate Change agenda.
What they should be doing is show up at the state house with truckloads of feathers and 5 gal buckets of driveway sealer.
OTOH, the sealer is a great source of hydrocarbons...
Oh, and some rails.
Thank God Almighty for the electoral college.
Trump was brilliant talking about the damage Chinese-made windmills are doing to our environment and birdlife.
>>California is the canary in the coal mine” as climate change threatens to upend life across the world.
The world? Only in California is the power getting shut off.<<
The wildfire problem in Calufornia is beuracratic mismanagement of the power infrastructure and forest. so-called “climate change” has nothing to do with it.
Humans adapt...they’ll get used to it or else perish. Nice job CA democrats/voters.
Divide California into three north south States.
Do NOT divide coastally.
The State of Jefferson is north.
So Cal is south.
In 5 years the northern State of Jefferson will have plenty of power.
