AR platforms have attracted many shooters from plinkers, hunters to long range competitive shooters. Even women are into AR's due to its lightweight system.
Before making the decision to go with an AR10 or AR15, lets take a look at the comparisons and some questions surrounding the AR10 and AR15.
Are AR15 and AR10 triggers interchangeable?
Most AR15 triggers will physically fit and function in a current AR-10 and 308AR rifle. However the reason AR-10 and 308 AR specific triggers exist is for one main reason, military primers. The primers in military ammo often require more energy to ignite the primer than .223/5.56 ammunition.
Can I use a 308 upper on an AR15 lower?
Similar in operation, AR-10s have a longer magazine well to fit the longer .308 cartridge, so a .308 upper would generally be too long to fit on a stock .223/5.56 lower.
Can I use AR15 buffer tube on AR10?
Yes, you will need to use either the carbine AR-15 carbine lower receiver extension (buffer tube) with an AR-10 spring and a shorter AR-10 buffer (to allow for the longer AR-10 bolt carrier group) or an AR-15 stock and the AR-10 buffer tube (but it will not collapse all the way).
Can you use an AR15 lower with an AR10 Upper?
Not like the AR-15, some AR-10 parts are not interchangeable between brands. In todays market, Armalite style and DPMS style are the two most popular specification that manufacturers use when making AR10s. These two AR-10 platforms are not the only .308 AR platforms available but they do dominate the market.
Are all AR15 barrels interchangeable?
Yes, you can swap out the barrel of your AR 15 for a new one.
If your firearm is "mil spec," or military standardas a majority of AR15s areyou should be able to swap out your existing barrel for another "mil spec" barrel. Read the rest of AR10 vs AR15.
Um, what’s the mission?
Skill saw or Mitre saw?
Get both. that’s better
I second that.
Yep.
Both, but it will double your pain after the terrible boating accident.
Gunner
Get an M1A for 308.
There is no “better”. They’re different tools, with different philosophies of use.
POF makes a cheaper and lighter AR10 with an upper sized to fit an AR15 lower. As AR10s go, I would get theirs in 6.5 Creedmore and another upper in 556. 556 allows volume of fire and 6.5 long range and less voluminous fire for relative low weight, which makes the 308 obsolete.
Not that cast Springfield crap that requires huge investments to accurize compared to AR10.
Since it's obviously 'click bait', maybe ASJ should include something in the title about "E.D." or curing baldness...
Ar10 parts are not as standardized and interchangeable between brands as those for the ar15. It’s a matter of philosophy of use that should help determine which tool and brand.
The choice of weapons depends on what you want to do with it.
Hunting, home defense or bragging rights.
And bigger isn’t always better. The largest grisly bear ever taken was taken in the early 1900s with a .22LR that entered the mouth passed through the roof of the mouth and into the brain. Needless to say the rifleman was either very skilled or very lucky or both. Usually the skull will deflect a .22 round.
Fwiw, after 3 decades as a LEO & retired MP officer, I must tell you that I’m NO FAN OF any AR-style rifle/carbine.
In 5.56NATO or 7.62x51/.308WCF, I prefer a Remington Model 760 or 7600 PUMP-rifle.
(I have, currently, EIGHT of them in calibers from 5.56NATO to 9.3x62MM Mauser & consider the 760/7600 to be SUPERIOR for target-shooting or hunting to ANY AR-style rifle. = A hunter/target shooter will have to spend a “goodly pile of dollars” to find/buy a AR that is as accurate as a Model 760 generally is new & “out of the box”.)
In a Main Battle Rifle, make mine a German semi-auto G3 in 7.62x51mm, a M1A and/or an “old-school” M1 Garand.
(My Korean War-era/RRAD-rebuild Garand will make ONE ragged, 8-shot, hole in the target at >300M IF I do my part, though my 73-YO eyes don’t see peep sights very well anymore.)
Note: I’m seriously considering “putting together” & “scoping” a G3-clone with a “mint condition” CETME “parts kit” & a new Texas-made “G3-clone” receiver.
(Btw, “putting together” a complete “parts kit” & a complete “stripped” receiver is NOT “building a rifle”. - It’s simply assembling a rifle.)
Just my opinions, TMN78247
Or you could get it in 6.5 PRC which, if not for present sales volume of the Creedmore, would make it obsolete.
The FN FAL is a nice option also.
Been fiddling with AR stuff for some years, never seen a .308 specific trigger.
And it accepts .308 sized magazines? Neat trick.........Nevah happen unless the lower is some unique part that is convertible.
100% TRUE, though I’m planning to “assemble” a G3-clone from a “mint condition” CETME parts kit (130.oo OTD at the SATX gun-show) on a Texas-built receiver (about 230.oo, including FFL transfer fee) in 7.62x51mm, as one of my several “Winter projects”..
(My “out of pocket cost”, including the “claw” scope-mount & NATO -”Mil-Spec” scope, will be < 500.oo USD.)
In 2019, I don’t believe that you can even buy a “decent set” of FAL parts for 500.oo.
Just my OPINION, TMN78247
Both.
I’m lucky I got the urge about 25 years ago. Don’t think two #s on mine match but I built it to shoot and it does that well. Don’t think I’ve got $400 in it.
