Researchers at AMBER, the SFI Research Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research hosted by Trinity College Dublin, today announced the development of a new way to exfoliate graphene using Irish whiskey. An increasing number of graphene production techniques have been developed to enable graphenes use in commercial applications. Liquid-phase exfoliation pioneered by AMBER researchers has been deemed by the research community as one of the most efficient and scalable means for producing high-quality graphene sheets.
In this study, the team from AMBER have shown that defect-free nanosheets can be exfoliated in Irish whiskey and also that inks produced in this manner can be printed into nanosheet networks for use in electronics. The whiskey used for the project was Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey and donated with thanks to Teeling Whiskey Company.
Liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) has become a widely used technique for producing defect-free nanosheets from layered crystals. LPE is very versatile and has now been applied to a range of common layered materials including graphite, talcum powder and clay. In recent years, the field has moved towards refining liquid-phase exfoliated nanomaterials into printable inks for use in printed electronics.

Here take another shot of whiskey.
How many defects do you see now?
Some of my best inspirations have come while well into a bottle.
Sounds like a waste of perfectly good whiskey.
Is there anything whiskey can’t do?
Or make you think it can do?
I believe Graphene is worth its weight in gold.
The answer to life, the universe and everything is printed on the bottom of the bottle.
I know that I always slide a little better after being lubricated with Irish Whiskey ...
And removing the enamel from my teeth ;-)
I’m looking for a job in quality control at that plant.
Did you hear the one about the Irishman who gave up whiskey?
Neither has anyone else.
They found they could make gasoline out of corn, the price of my soda pop went up
Now they learn they can make steel like stuff out of whisky _____ ______ ________
Fill in the blanks.
I can think of a better use for Irish whiskey.
Good news: a new materials technology promises to make everyone's life better, solve the energy crisis, clean up the environment, end global hunger, cure all diseases, and provide free puppies and kittens to poor children.
Bad news: price of whisky's going up.
Sorry. Too steep a price.
Real science with practical value!
The first time I tasted Irish whisky I thought, Liquid Sunshine!
Whiskey, ink...ok...
I hope this story is not just a bunch of blarney, designed to cause a run on Irish Whiskey
