DETROIT – Fiat Chrysler's Ram pickup unseated General Motors' Chevrolet Silverado as the second-best selling vehicle in the U.S. during the first nine months of the year. With a United Auto Workers strike underway that has shut down GM's pickup production, the Ram likely will beat the Silverado for the full year for the first time, according to auto sales experts.

At the end of September, the Ram had a lead of nearly 52,000 vehicles, according to company sales figures released Wednesday. So far this year, U.S. buyers snapped up 461,115 Rams, an increase of 23% over the same time last year. GM sold 409,316 Silverados during the first nine months, down 3.6% from a year ago. The Allen County GM plant produces some of the Silverado models.

They are both OK trucks, but the price of new ones is just ridiculous.

Let’s see. F150 or Porsche?

Porsche doesn’t offer “massage seats”.

It’s in the article - UAW is striking against GM.

No trucks being made = no custom truck orders being filled, no inventory of popular configs in dealer lots = other people’s trucks pass it in sales.

Ram has outsold Silverado every quarter this year.. in the first quarter Chevy sales were down 16% or so and Rams up 15% compared to the year before.

Fords sales have been about the same as last year overall pickup sales as a category were down 1% in the first quarter.

Ram was completely redesigned for 2019. So it may be more appealing, and equipped to buyers than a comparable Silverado.

Ram msrp base price is actually almost 5k higher than the base Silverado.. though I suspect the base Silverado does not compare feature to feature with thr base Ram... but given that sharp of a shift I do suspect that the comparable equipped Silverado as the base Ram probably has a higher price point.

Or it could be Ram stole some bigger commercial contracts for its vehicles from Chevy

No, the ram has outsold the Silverado every quarter of this year. Strike is not thr cause. Though the strike ensures Silverado has no chance of retaking the sales lead over ram this year

When look at the Chevy and the Dodge...the new Ram looks more like what a Silverado should then the Chevy.

Dodge was always a better looking truck to me. Last pickup I owned was a 2001. Great truck except for the trans. Too much electronics on new cars now, don’t know how well that’ll mix with beach and sand..

That’s what I was getting at - the strike means there’s no way the Silverado can get its position back; can’t sell what you don’t have in inventory and can’t order. The strike is also going to affect the Silverado’s sales long after the strike as it’s going to miss out on contract letting.

Ram did a nice style revamp this year. I think it improved Ram’s appearance a lot.

I don’t think they OWN GM. They are a major stake holder, as I believe (though could be wrong) that thr union got some significant stock during the BK fiasco. They are required 8 believe to keep at least 50% of the shares they were granted, but their total share of the company was never 51% of thr overall company.

These shares I believe were part of the pension and the UAW has sold at least some of their shares for cash since the BK.

They may be the biggest single shareholder but they do not hold a controlling interest (50% + 1 share)

Agreed. My wife even looked at one of the new Ram 3500s with dual rear wheels - at the campground we were at. Out of the blue she said something to the effect that yeah, if we ever got a 5th wheel (eg retired, full timers or nearly so) that she could see having a truck like that. Previously when we would talk about it and I would advocate for a dually for a 5th wheel she was against it. The dually that is. She’s actually the one pushing for the 5th wheel rig.

Stupid Marxists killing the goose again and again.

I’m a Chrysler Corp brand fan. I refused to buy another Chrysler product until the Union was OUT. After Fiat (Fix It Again Tony) bought out the Union share...I bought a new Ram in 2014. Nice truck. Not even a hiccup for 5 years.

Seems to me the simplest thing to do would be
to give the Union everything they ask for. Every. Last. Demand.

Then, hike the prices of all of its vehicles to pay for the union demands. Make it a specific line on the sticker price: “Union demands”. Watch the market share dwindle and their “profit share” dry up. It’s been more than a generation since the Japanese fed us our asses with cheaper labor and higher quality. Apparently we have forgotten.

I just bought a new Tacoma. I gave just about double what I paid for my 04. I quit buying UAW vehicles 30 years ago.
