Scientific studies indicate that a tomb that, according to legend, held Jesus Christ’s body dates back nearly 1,700 years.

It is unknown whether the tomb ever really kept Jesus ‘ body. The limestone bed dates back to nearly 300 years after Jesus ‘ death. In addition, several other sites claim to hold the “tomb of Jesus.”

If it did, it was not for very long

Rock age is virtually irrelevant.

Luke 23:50-54 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

Joseph's "new tomb" could have just been cut out of the rock, or he might have just bought it from someone else, who also hadn't used it. We don't know!

Well, it was empty and originally purchased by Joseph.

I would assume the tomb would hold the body of a guy named Joseph.

I mean, waste not; want not!

It’s not like Jesus needed it.

“The limestone bed dates back to nearly 300 years after Jesus‘ death.”

That’s some young limestone.

If it’s 1700 years old, that would date it to about the time that Helena (Constantine’s mother) went to the Holy Land to identify sites associated with the life of Jesus. No one knew where Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb was so they obligingly carved a fresh tomb to show to Helena as the right one.

The earliest Christians were busy spreading the Gospel and establishing communities. Setting up shrines and monuments commemorating the places where Jesus had been was probably not a priority.

A few generations later, a historical consciousness set in, and they wanted to memorialize the places where Jesus had lived, suffered, and died. But by then the identity of those actual places was probably somewhat muddled, which is why more than one location is sometimes claimed to be the site of various events in the life of Jesus.

Why would the Romans give a tomb, to a man, who in their eyes, was an executed criminal?

The grounds for the American Consulate in Jerusalem has Lott’s tomb and it is violated by housing another agencies personnel and equipment. When I inquired as to how this is possible given the Bible I was told biblical beliefs were of no consideration since they are not valid. Liberals have ZERO RESPECT for God nor others if it is an inconvenience.

The article is written very poorly. I think the point is that the tomb was last exposed 1,700 years ago, meaning the marble cladding (edicule) that was added to protect it was 1,700 years old. If the tomb were in fact only 1,700 years old, it would be impossible “the tomb ever really kept Jesus ‘ body.” But the test of its “age” is “when the quartz within the masonry was last exposed to light.” So the tomb is AT LEAST 1,700 years old.

Well maybe, and it doesn’t help that the author doesn’t seem very knowledgeable about the history of this church, and it’s not particularly well written.

Mean historic conservation practices were not quite up to modern standards. There was a temple to Venus on the site. They hacked away the entire hill, just leaving this core, if you will, where the tomb was located. They demolished the temple and built the church around the excavated core. A massive engineering feat. Now maybe Helena just took the word of some rando who said this was the site, but to undertake such a massive engineering project without some assurance it was the right site supposed quite a bit. Just as likely, the aging is correct and represents the romans just cleaning up and tidying the tomb to make way for the decorations to be installed

>> Why would the Romans give a tomb, to a man, who in their eyes, was an executed criminal? <<

Uh, they didn’t. The bible is very clear that Joseph of Arimathea received his body back, and laid him in a tomb. The only thing the Romans had to do with it was that they perceived that the disciples would remove him from the tomb and claim he had been risen, so they rolled an enormous stone in front of it, and posted guards.

I do wonder if this was a bureaucratic screw-up by Rome. They certainly could’ve denied Jesus’ body to his followers and saved the expense of the boulder and guard. But perhaps the fact it was a member of the Sanhedrin asking for his body back, someone failed to realize that Jesus had effectively been stripped of his Jewish citizenship during his hearing before Herod; perhaps Pilate hadn’t been aware of WHY Herod was sending Jesus back to him.

(To be clearer: The gospels don’t spell out WHY Herod returned Jesus to Pilate, but if the Jews alleged that Jesus had been born out of wedlock, they could’ve stripped him of his rights as a Jew. Indeed, the skeptics’ claim that the peace between Rome and the Hasmoneans would’ve prevented his crucifixion would be plausible if Jesus were a Jew in good standing; the fact that Jesus would have been perceived of as a bastard by a disbeliever would have been grounds for removing his nominal protection under Herod. Of course, Herod acted subserviently to Rome to prevent Rome from unilaterally rewriting the conditions of Israel’s nominal semi-autonomy, so such protection was largely nominal anyway.)
