VIDEO: Hurricane Dorian: Return of White Ibis Confirms Indian Folklore

I was wondering why I saw such a large gathering of White Ibis outside today. We normally have a few of them around but not this many so I did some research and found out that according to Indian folklore, the White Ibis are the first birds to exit an area when a hurricane approaches and are the first to return when a hurricane leaves the area. This confirms that this Indian folklore, based on hundreds and thousands of years of observing animal behavior, is correct.

I'm thinking that the behavior of White Ibis are a better indicator about the approach of a hurricane than computer model spaghetti maps. I will be paying more attention to the White Ibis in the future. And what they hell are they eating after they poke their beaks into the ground? They do a lot of that after a rain which just happened in this case.

Why not? Indians weren’t fools and obviously neither are the Ibis.

It really wasn’t until the Cantore Index that people had anything as reliable. Only with Cantore it’s the opposite from the birds.

It was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation
asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold
or mild. Since he was an Indian Chief in a modern
society, he had never been taught the old secrets.

When he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the weather
was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he
replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to
be cold and that the members of the village should collect
firewood to be prepared.

Also, being a practical leader, after several days he got
an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National
Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to
be cold?”

“It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold
indeed,” the meteorologist at the weather service
responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told
them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared.

A week later, he called the National Weather Service
again. “Is it going to be a very cold winter?”

“Yes,” the man at National Weather Service again replied,
“it’s definitely going to be a very cold winter.” The
Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to
collect every scrap of wood they could find.

Two weeks later, he called the National Weather Service
again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going
to be very cold?”

“Absolutely,” the man replied. “It’s going to be one of
the coldest winters ever.”

“How can you be so sure?” the Chief asked.

The weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting wood
like crazy.”

I don’t even know why they cause it “folklore” as if it is some kind of legend. This behavior by the White Ibis is based on many years of observation by the Indians who observed all kinds of animals very closely.

So were the birds just about to leave the area, or are they now returning?

Returning but more than I remember before. Perhaps this is a pitstop for many of them from other areas on their way to areas from which Dorian is leaving.

I loved your story. I love white ibis. I ❤️Florida and Floridians. I am so happy that the hurricane is blowing east. God bless all the first responders👏

Anyone remember that scene in “The Horse Soldiers” when the William Holden character who was a doctor treated the leg wound of a soldier with a mixture of grass and mud that he said the Plains Indians used to good effect? Then later the soldier tossed it away because he claimed it itched him and the wound got infected and he died.

White flight? Even the hurricanes are prejudiced.

I was thinking the same thing! Why would it be called folklore?

As far as your other post, penicillin was known by people far longer than when it was “discovered”. But, like the horse soldier, rejected by many educated people.

I hope the worst is now over, at least for that area.
We joke here about Swamp Creatures, but in reality, some very fine looking, elegant birds tend to hang out in the swamps.
The Ibis, for one, the Egret, the Blue Heron, and everyone’s favorite waterbird, The Trumpet Swan. Just don’t ever mess with a Trumpet Swan when they’re trying to protect their chicks. Don’t let your dog disturb them. They can be vicious.
