1994: The year I stopped caring about baseball.
I watch baseball more than ever now after playing in the 80s and 90s.
Same thing will happen in the NFL. I’m going to attend more PGA events, most of the players and the league support American values.
Its like football. Was an avid fan for many years, nothing crazy mind you but now it just seems like a tremendous waste of time when I can be out doing other more important things and enjoying life.
Getting too expensive to attend. Parking $$, high priced tickets if you don’t want out in nosebleed right outfield, $20 hamburger, $10 coke.
I had the definite sense after 1994 that the strike was a bridge too far and alienated many fans and that the alienation would be long term, or permanent. Looks like that’s holding true.
IMO...
Baseball needs a major upgrade for the 21st century.
many don;t have the patience or the attn span anymore.
maybe institute a “shot clock” for pitches.
A timer for innings change overs.
Some sort of 3 pointers for home runs.
Blocker in the base lines
Water traps/ alligators between 3rd and home..
Anything!! Just speed up the pace and get more excitement in there!!
The half way decent seats are still too expensive. MLB made a conscious effort to make the stadiums smaller and more intimate. More downtown too.
But after 1994, baseball was back on top!

Same here! That strike turned me off to baseball.
And Krapperdick and the reaction to him did that for me for football.
Now I’m pretty much cured of the addiction to all the “opiods of the people”- which includes TV, movies, sports... Life is so much better.
I’m left with one addiction - FR.
I don’t watch baseball because of some long-ago strike. I don’t watch baseball because it’s slow, and dull. Speed it up guys, or you have lost me forever.
Steroid use.
I wonder how much local tv coverage has impacted the attendance.
A major issue with stadiums getting smaller, is that the new ballparks are all baseball only stadiums. The stadiums built in the ‘60s and early ‘70s were almost all built for both baseball and football. The seating arrangements, sightlines, etc. are different for a football only stadium and a baseball only stadium. Building stadiums to accommodate both sports meant the stadiums were not ideal for either.
The strike was 25 years ago. The bigger issues are things like the length of the games and the problems small market teams have competing with the rich teams.
I want them ALL to be on steroids.. massive and huge.
And to have MMA action for each runner to get onto each base...
NOW we’d be talking..

I couldn’t agree more (see my post #13). As it is, you could walk away from a baseball game for 15 or 20 minutes, and hardly miss a thing.
But no way will MLB change a thing. Because of tradition and such. And that’s a shame. Because baseball could be an interesting sport, if only it were updated.
