Schools Worry Over New Trump Rule on Immigrants and Federal Benefits
Education Week ^ | August 12, 2019 | Andrew Ujifusa

A new Trump administration rule regarding immigrants' use of federal benefits could have an indirect but significant impact on schools if it deters families from seeking assistance under certain programs, education advocates warn.

The administration has released its final rule for what's known as "public charge." This is the process by which the U.S. government determines if an immigrant seeking to become a permanent resident or extend a visa is likely to become "primarily dependent" on federal benefits—such a determination can lead the government to deny permanent residency or the visa.

Previously, benefits that were factors in this process included a limited number of programs such as Supplemental Social Security and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. However, according to the finalized rule, other benefits that can now be included in these determinations include the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program—also called "food stamps"—most forms of Medicaid, and forms of housing vouchers and rental assistance under Section 8, among others.

The administration has argued that moving public charge in this direction would remove a potential burden on the federal government's welfare programs. The Trump team released a draft of the rule last year that included those changes to public charge.

I don’t know of any other country that lets people come in and go on welfare.

This would free up assisted housing for American families, some are living on the streets because nothing is available for them.

Decades of (a) expanding benefits and (b) federal rules sticking heads in the sand as expanded benefits were also extended to illegals has meant prior administrations failed to keep the rules regarding “public charge” up to date with the expansion of social benefits that do truly represent a “public charge”.

Trump is merely doing what many prior administrations failed to do immediately on their watch - cut off the states from expanding public benefits to illegals and “green card” holders when being a legal immigrant has always required, by federal law, that a legal immigrant must be self-sufficient or have sponsored means of support here.

What happened was Presidents failed to keep the rules in sync with - protecting against - the expansion of benefits and the extending of benefits to immigrants.

I also think there is the funding based on how many people these school are getting. The US system and up here in Washington is like that. The government pays for these people and we get the bill....

This is a huge deal and as usual the media glosses over that....

One of the requirements my grandfather had to meet when he immigrated here in 1899 was to show that he had family/friends who would see to it that he didn’t become a public charge. Of course, since illegals don’t have to follow our laws, it’s different for them.

If they are complaining it is because they are concerned they will lose money.

I live in Kentucky and we have the best governor I’ve seen in my lifetime - Bevin. I call him an articulate Trump. One thing he’s doing is cleaning up our state employee’s pension nightmare. Of course, that means state employees are none too happy about it. And here’s the interesting part: A lot of people I know have much hate for this governor. The odd thing is that these people are culturally and politically similar to me. So, why the hate on Bevin? Every single one of them is either a public school teacher or has a family member that is.

i.e. they are voting their wallet.

California schools in many areas have become all day long care centers for the children of illegals.

In the morning the kids are dropped off at school and free monitoring and a free breakfast. Then, the kids get snacks and a free lunch.

Then free playground monitoring after school is over for the day, and the other kids go home.

Off course there are snacks/food/drinks for those staying at the schools.

Of course these kids hear how evil the white man is, while getting the above, again for free.

we can only hope. Then perhaps they will also not attend public schools on the back of taxpayers forced to pay - which is ridiculous.

when our taxpayer supported public colleges are actively recruiting foreign students.... and increasing their enrollments at (some places) an astonishing rate......
....and thus over-crowding some key required courses — peventing or delaying our own children from graduating, or from graduating on time...

there is something very very wrong.

additionally, these taxpayer supported public colleges hire staff to advise and counsel illegals how to avoid the authorities and stay in USA illegally

additionally, these taxpayer supported public colleges set up campus offices to assist students in signing up for all kinds of free welfare benefits and cash

and these colleges provide their own medical and nursing services and also free boxes of food

etc etc etc

if you want to find out where a lot of illegals are hiding out...and getting paid by US to do it... right here in our country (supposedly our country, anyway).. .just swing by your local public college

Public schools are funded on a per student, per day basis.
This is why the schools no longer want parents calling in to say little Hernando is staying home with the sniffles.

They’re marking kids “present” even when they’re not.

So if Trump wants to shut down asylum claims for illegals on welfare, illegals will stop coming & those here may even begin to self-deport.

Entire schools may be forced to close or consolidate due to reduced illegal populations.
