The music festival at Woodstock 50 years ago was a big deal. There had never been anything quite like it in America before not in terms of size or caliber of performers (though Monterrey Pop might not have been too far behind in terms of the latter).
But with the 50th anniversary approaching, it was inevitable that precincts of the mainstream media would make Woodstock out to be more than what it was. The heady combination of nostalgia and leftism would see to that.
That combination outdid itself in a PBS program called Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation. I watched as much of it as I could take (about an hour) last night.
Rather than pick apart the content, Ill just focus on the title. Woodstock did not define a generation. Not even close.

That's right. Hendrix played at both. ;-)
lol
It’s amazing how self righteous people get as they age :)
I’m 51 and I’m sure I’ll be the same way at 80.
If I can’t have any fun anymore, no one can! :)
[[There had never been anything quite like it in America before]]
And there will never be anything like it again- the vibe of the era is over- it will never happen again- you will never have the originators of hippy type music again- it’s been done already- You can’t recreate the atmosphere of the times-
If only the Woodstock Generation stayed out of politics.
I was fifteen at the time, with raging hormones. I bought the special Life edition of Woodstock. Damn, naked hippy chicks! Oh and great music, too.
“As a cynical Generaiton Xer, Woodstock to me represents how much Boomers were hypocrites. They get all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, I got lectures about Just Say No and AIDS.”
So... you’re whining because you think that all Boomers were hedonists and you’ve been left out?
As a Boomer, I knew Woodstock for what it was: hippies doing drugs, screwing in the mud, and defecating like animals — while big, over-amped speakers screeched out the same music that played on the local rock stations. No thanks.

"I was up to my knees in rice paddies, with guns that didn't work! Going in there, looking for Charlie, slugging it out with him; While pussies like you were back here partying, putting headbands on, doing drugs, and listening to the g......... Beatle albums! Oh! Oh! Oh!"
Maybe a lot of them had learned something from their mistakes, by the time you came along.

Thank God.
Of course it’s lead to much worse.
Geeze, Sam Kinison was annoying.
LOL!
RIP, Sam Kinison.

Fortunately, I was just a shade too young for that Boomer generation experience. I instead went to college in New Orleans.

Kinda like San Fransisco today
The Left could not quite overthrow the government so they have settled on facilitating their fundamental antagonisms toward personal cleanliness, housing, indoor plumbing, and sobriety.

IIRC, John Philips (Mamas/Papas) was the driving force behind Monterrey Pop Festival.
Fun fact: it also featured Norah Jones’ father, Ravi Shankar on sitar.
