For months, Supreme Court obsessives (guilty as charged) have been waiting for the court to decide whether to permit the Trump administration to add a question about citizenship to the 2020 census. That decision could come down as soon as Thursday, but it might not be long before the topic is back in front of the high court. If the justices rule that the question can go on the form, the legal fallout from the ruling could get messy quickly.
Much of the controversy around the question has focused on how it will affect the accuracy of the population count. Theres a reason for that as I wrote earlier this week, census data helps guide countless decisions about American life, including how our congressional representatives are distributed. But theres an additional fight brewing, and it has major implications for FiveThirtyEights other favorite topic: gerrymandering.

This decision possibly the last opinion released on Monday(?)
...sniff...sniff! What’s that I smell?
That the point. Trump wants to find out exactly how many non-citizens are in this country. Its probably up to 70 million by now.
IMO, Cali and NY don’t want it because they want to disguise the exodus from their states, with illegals who return the questioner. Probably illegals don’t want it because they are afraid ICE will pick them up and deport if they check NO.
Dilution is not the solution.
The public school system is not teaching students basic math and are skipping past the importance of weighted averages. Several “normal” distributions are shifting in the wrong direction.
Dumb question: won’t people just lie?
removing noncitizens from the population count would likely help Republicans when redistricting season rolls around, by making it easier to shift the balance of political power from urban to rural areas.
Its one man one vote. Only citizens should be counted for Congressional districts, since noncitizens cannot legally vote.
Because everyone who is a non-citizen is going to answer the question truthfully, and then we’ll know how many non-citizens are here.
Why fight over this?
My bet is, if the question is on the census, illegals would not respond or would answer honestly. At least while Trump is in office.
If the question is NOT on the census: Then I suggest conservatives in blue states refuse to comply. If there were enough conscientious objectors, blue states would have a mess on their hands while they try to sort it out.
The constitution sorta muddled that. Vote needs citizenship. Census needs warm body. I wish they were more clear, but alas....
I dont Trust Roberts, especially when it comes to illegals. He was among those who smacked AZ down for trying to enforce Federal Law. I expect him to stab us in the back again.
What would possess people who are here illegally (criminals) to answer honestly on a census form or any form for that matter?
Related question: What tools/databases do authorities have to help them verify a person's citizenship status?
I know it’s not a popular position here, but the census is to count those living here.
Citizen or non-citizen statistics are for information only.
non-citizens will still be counted along with the rest, as far as re-districting is concerned
Why can’t POTUS do it by EO, keep it off census.
Good idea for blue state conservatives to dodge the census. Cut the districts for the blue states.
I agree. Why is it republican justices who get wobbly? Democrats never do.
not sure it that was even an issue when Constitution was written . Or later census.
And the three fifths compromise was the order of the day.
Correct me if I am wrong, but not answering truthfully on a census for a crime?
always was.
see census.gov
Okay so if they put the citizenship question on the census form what requires someone to answer it? And who doesn’t think that the Democrats won’t organize a boycott of that question by all Democrats in protest?
