media outlets ranging from Vice to the Daily Beast to, just today, the New York Times have employed the term brainwashing, almost entirely uncritically.
The problem with that, which apparently has occurred to none of these outlets whose writers from time to time advertise their reverence for science, is that there is no such thing as brainwashing. It is a concept with no scientific basis, generally regarded as pseudoscience. It is mainly a literary device, one popularized by The Manchurian Candidate.
Brainwashing is right up there with recovered memories, multiple-personality disorder, homeopathy, chiropractic, reiki, the anti-vaccine movement, and the terror of GMO vegetables in the catalogue of voguish nonsense that has made its way at least partly into the mainstream of American life.
Everybody loves science until they dont.

Convincing your girlfriend that she’s crazy or paranoid is called gaslighting , and it’s a dick move.
Convincing her that she’s a robot with artificially implanted human emotions is called bladerunning, and it’s a Philip K. Dick move.
Couldnt get past the BS title.....
Good one. It’s astonishing. The Espionage Act isn’t hard to understand. She shredded it yet the media reports “endless investigations that have concluded no wrong doing” - which is a lie as well. Liberals repeat it without a critical thought.
The Project Veritas exposure of profiting from abortions is another - it was all just “edited videos” ya know.
He’s setting up a strawman and knocking it down. Does he bother to define his terms? This is the problem with unscrupulous types. When they use a word, it doesn’t usually mean what you think it does.
Advertising is a form of brainwashing when you get right down to it. Billions of dollars are spent to persuade people to buy certain products.
Indoctrination is a form of brainwashing, especially when coupled with younger students who don’t have a fully formed sense of self. Much of what passes for education today is clearly a kind of child abuse. It’s not even so much what they are teaching, it’s what they are not teaching. The ability to think critically, the weigh the source of the information, to spot classic logical fallacies, to use facts and reason and experience to shape our opinions versus emotion.
The modern university liberal arts school is just a marxist boot camp where impressionable youth is turned into reactionary foot soldiers and “community organizers” and similar. This has been ongoing for decades.
The so-called Frankfurt School aka “Social Research”, numerous communists were kicked out of Germany in the 1930s and set up shop in America, Columbia and elsewhere, where they immediately set about dismantling society. This is the thanks they gave.
He's just an a-hole. This is the guy who said working class communities deserve to die.
National Review Writer: Working-Class Communities Deserve To Die
Willard’s Daddy, George Romney, claims he was when he was Gov of Michigan and went with a group of politicians to Vietnam...
Then how does one explain Scientology?
But this is only like brainwashing. I would think the idea of washing somthing should be part of it. Yoga meditations and other forms of mental kenosis are in this category.
Agreed. Sloppy thinking everywhere, but sloppy thinking is not brainwashing.
He’s right so far as TV/movie/spy novel/”Manchurian Candidate” style brain washing. Can you persuade people to do & think illogical stupid things? Yes happens all the time! Often you don’t need to, they persuade themselves for various reasons. Guess that’s “brain washing” in a sense. Actually its modern marketing!
It not brainwashing, but it is conditioning.
There are tons of examples that have been used since the Catholic Church first founded the science of propaganda years ago. And its not a slam at the Churchthey WERE the organization that created the process.
These days we often mistake intellectual laziness for brainwashed. And its not just a product of the left. Look for memes and repeated comments that are familiar from TV and the Internet.
I used to tell my wife that usually the people parroting propaganda with buzz words and catch phrases, never read to the end of the book.
Brainwashing is DEFINITELY not real for demonrats... if anything, they require a light rinse...
Business Schools in America brainwash students in to thinking “free trade” is a religion where in the rest of the world they teach protectionism, and mercantilism. Our business “leaders’ are globalist brainwashed robots.
I think Rome did this with free grain and circuses/games to put the masses in a good mood
Would love to see you start a thread with that thesis.
Q - Why didn’t he also list Gender Dysphoria?
A - Because he is Brainwashed.
Read the book by Bernays, entitled Propaganda.
Its purpose was actually quite benign: The office in the Vatican was created to offset the Protestant movement.
It was only refined to mass media during WWI; and then refined as advertising during the 1920s. Anyone who took an advertising class in college should have read the book and understand the persuasive art.
Honestly, anyone who understands the basics can see through the BS on both sides. Because it coms from both sides.
Really, our skools and moms’ basements are full of the end results of ... brainwashing.
You should do some reading on Propaganda. You fall for the simplest version, targeted at those who literally, have the lowest critical thinking skills and thus have to be scared into their beliefs: The conspiracy theory.
It amuses me when I see you type it.
He was not very thorough and he is WRONG.
I’ve researched this topic for many years and lectured at several academic conferences on the topic, “How to Recognize and Resist Mind Control and Manipulation. “
I’ve studied cults and am trained in stage hypnosis(just to understand it as I will never use it).
In order to understand the topic in a religious setting, I spent years visiting charismatic churches to differentiate the real born again experience from the fake process.
My degree in psychology did not help as much as many years studying neuroscience and consciousness.
It’s a fascinating topic and the more I learn the more humbling as I keep having many more unanswered questions.
For example, the epigenetic influence of placebos and how they work is just one example of mind control where the biochemical influence is not understood.
Science is about understanding how God works.
