All I have time for today is an update on the 2019 Key Lime Pie situation.
The bad news: the bakery department at my local Costco confirmed they do not have them this year and they will not be getting them either. This is a real blow - they were absolutely the best key lime pie anywhere, ever.
They were better than the ones you make yourself. They had the perfect crust (not dry and crummy) perfectly balanced filling: creamy, sweet-tart, fresh. And did I mention huge? You could cut them into at least 12 pieces and freeze them to be parceled out over the entire summer. But alas, no more. So I now officially hate Costco.
After getting this bad news on Thursday I happened to be Sams Club today for something else and spotted the key lime pie they sell. Half the size for more than half the price of the now defunct Costco version. I could tell from the color and texture of the lavish dollops of white cream on top that not only was it not real whipped cream but it wasnt real anything. But I thought, what the heck, I can take it off. And I noticed that it came with a crummy looking graham cracker crust, but I figured I could just eat the delicious custard and leave the crust behind. I know: even a moron would have waved themselves off at this point but not me. I bought it anyway.
Tip: it the whipped cream looks like shaving cream step away from the pie
As they say the proof is in the pudding and it was. It was beyond awful. Acrid, nasty lime-ish slime that, trust me, you wouldnt even feed to the dog. Even Raj wouldnt eat it and hell normally eat anything with sugar in it. So consider yourself warned if you are a member of both clubs and think the bakery products are interchangeable: they are not. Save yourself $7 and leave that artificially flavored, colored gel in a pie tin sitting in the case. So now I hate Sams Club too. My shopping choices are growing more limited by the day.
Anyway, we have to leave at 5:15 am for Rajs knee surgery (repair of double meniscus tear that seems to be getting worse) at 6:15 so thats all the whining I have time for this morning. So why dont you all carry on without me, it is Monday Moanin after all. And if you cant think of something to moan about make something up.
The surgery should go smoothly but your prayers are always most welcome.

Key Largo? Well, there’s always The Blond Giraffe in Tavernier...
Key Lime Pie is my favorite. Now that it’s gone, I’ll miss it, even though I never had Cosco’s
I'll let you know in a few years how the first pie turns out.
Mrs. L made an amazingly good Key Lime pie 3 days ago. Its gone. We ate every bit.
Best,
L
See post #4. *chuckle*
This stuff is the secret to a really good home made Key Lime pie. Make your own crust, tho. Them store bought things are nasty. 16 graham crackers and 6 Tbsp of melted butter. Then follow the recipe on the bottle.
Delicious. Did I mention real whipped cream and not that stuff in the can?
Enjoy.

P.S. Mrsl L is making another one today.
I went on a sailing trip with 7 other people on a 42 foot catamaran some years ago, and we went to some island I cannot recall which was somehow known for the best Key Lime pie in the Caribbean. It was also known for its cat population, for some reason.
We all went ashore, each of us couples thinking we would surprise all the others by going to this famous bakery and bringing back a couple of pies for dinner.
We ended up with eight Key Lime pies...:)
I like Key Lime Pie, but good gosh, I was so sick of it after that!
Publix has very good Key Lime pie. I can only get it when we go south because there are no Publix stores here in Pa.
Yup! And cannolis, too! Mmmmmm...
I keep waiting for Publix to arrive here, too. Not holding my breath though, just praying for the event to happen in my lifetime.
I think that I've shopped at over 100 different locations across the country. Their selection varies a small amount.
I was able to get an Italian sausage at the Costco out at the end of Long Island, could have purchased a frozen whole suckling pig in McAllen and did buy a home school size box of Fruit Loop Unicorns in Utah. Still working on a visit to one of the Taiwan Costco.
We'll see if they are from the same factory bakery, if not purchasable anywhere.
The key lime pie at Costco is great.
Hope Town on Elbow Cay, Abaco, the Bahamas. No cars and only two grocery stores, both small. You have to place an order and hope you were early enough. What you get is a real key lime pie, better than any I have eaten.
I think that is it!!!!
Hahaha, we ran aground a little going in there, and had to dive over the side to check the bottom, no damage and didn’t have to get pulled off, but only a slightly bruised ego on the part of our captain!
I’m not sure that the guy who made these is still alive and/or working. He was a little long in the tooth last time I was there, but his family has been on Elbow Cay since they left Charleston at the end of the Revolutionary War (they were Loyalists). I’m sure that someone in the family are still making those pies.
Well, Key lime pie does freeze well. I’m the same way when I go home for the holidays and need my fix of Lebanon bologna. My wife and I go shopping, and she says, “You only need one or two packs.” I end up with regular, sweet, double-smoked and have six or seven packs in the cart. Same goes for perogies. It’s hard to find sauerkraut-stuffed perogies in Alabama. In fact, I’ve never found any.
Thanks! I just pulled our Key Lime pie out of the oven.
Needs 3-1/2 hours to cool.
Give me patience, Dear Lord.
Heres the recipe. Add two or three extra tablespoons of butter to the crust recipe. Tamp it firmly into the pie pan. Dont go gorilla on it, just make sure its firm before you bake it.

Actually, the original phrase is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating," meaning that one knows it's good if many people will eat it. Or, you won't know if something is good until you try it.
