Teddy the Golden Retriever is less than a year old but he has already learned how to steal your stuff which he loves to do. Nothing is safe from Teddy. If he thinks you have something you value in any way, he will try to steal it from you. For example, he once stole my selfie-stick and hid it under the dining table. Another time he grabbed a plastic bag containing a bottle of Pepsi from me and stole that as well. Teddy also goes on "havoc runs" in which he runs upstairs and quickly grabs things at random to hide downstairs. The more he annoys you, the better he likes it. The only warning you get from Teddy that he is about to steal from you is the impish look he gets in his eyes.
Sounds like some good training is in order.
This kid of behavior gets tiring very fast.
Well, Teddy knows a few tricks such as when we order him to “SIT.” Anyway, despite his behavior being a bit annoying, it is also fun to watch him going on his stealing rampages. However, I wasn’t too happy when he stole my selfie-stick and kept it well-hidden.
You call it stealing; Teddy calls it retrieving.

Good point. I guess that’s because he is a Golden RETRIEVER.
Correct.
The dog needs a daily trip to a body of water to practice stick retrieval. And to get walked about 4 mi. / day daily.
I had a Golden I taught to bring in the Sunday paper. I got up one Sunday morning and Rusty was sitting by a pile of papers on the front porch. He was very proud of himself. I got to play newspaper boy that morning.
Lol!
This will lead to a obsessive behavior if not corrected.
He will “claim” that stuff as his own. It can lead to aggression in time.
Its entirely different than retrieving, where the dog is working to please the master.
Never have to strike the dog. Use treats to reward the correct behavior-when you go to reclaim whatever he has, when he gives it up, reward him. If he attempts to claim something, get in between him and that item and use your hands to warn him off-point your finger at him and give him a look of-”you better not try that.” Then step towards him to convince him that it is YOURS and not his. When he backs off, reward him. with a petting or praise.
I had a golden whom I loved dearly. She stole from all the neighbors. Every week, my wife and I had to return some item or another that she had stolen.
There was on neighbor who was notoriously difficult. The golden stole a pair of shoes from her. Taking them back took enormous courage.
Except for this ghastly fault, our golden was just about perfect.
It’s all a game to him. He gets your attention, his goal. I bet he can tell you think it’s funny, so he senses you enjoy the game too!
This is puppy ehavior. He will grow out of most of is.
I was given a Queensland heeler puppy. Now about a year old.
However, has the memory retention of a gnat.
When she gets pushed away, she rebounds like a boomerang.
If I don’t speak after reprimanding her, she stays still. IF I SPEAK-—she seems to think that was a one-time & short time reprimand and comes back for more attention.
She is all muscle, bone & attitude.
HOWEVER-—she is a great watchdog...nothing escapes her attention & barking, including the bunnies who live under the hay stack.
She is taking forever to socialize. She wants attention all the time, but she is very mouthy towards anyone who comes near me. She gets put into office when neighbors come over, unless those neighbors are the ones with doggie treats-—then she LOVES them & begs them for more treats.
Everyone says she will grow out of it at 3 or 4. I am now 79, and am not sure I will last that long.
Teddy’s a big tease! I had a dog was half retriever (and half wheaton terrier); if he didn’t have something to take from you, he’d take whatever he’d think you MIGHT like and try to make it seem like the most wonderful thing in the world so you’d chase him (growling and dropping his front half, like a terrier). (If you know terriers, you know they have a growl that they use for attention to play, rather than to intimidate; it’s totally different than an angry growl.) You’d think he wants to play fetch, but he really wants to play keep-away!
We put the Christmas tree out in the back yard until we could prepare the living room for it, and the dang dog tried to play keep-away with the Christmas tree!
There is a product for flea/tick collar that is on TV. Boxer named JAKE is always bringing something back home.
Best one is when he shows up t the door with the TOP of a bikini in his jaws.........
So you managed to raise a Democrat, you must be so proud:^)
Not my dog. It belongs to my sister-in-law and her kids.
That Coppertone billboard had been at the same location near where I used to live for about 50 years. Tragically they finally took it down. PC? It was located by the 1-95/Palmetto Xpressway Cloverleaf in North Miami Beach, Florida. It was part of our landscape like the HOLLYWOOD sign. Now sadly gone.
