The New York Times recently published this article about the relatively large number of recent deaths on Mt. Everest.
The article states:
Some climbers did not even know how to put on a pair of crampons, clip-on spikes that increase traction on ice, Sherpas said.
People like that should not be allowed on the mountain.
This is from the same article. The bolding is mine:
I saw some people like they had no emotions, he said. I asked people for water and no one gave me any. People are really obsessed with the summit. They are ready to kill themselves for the summit.
This person also has no business being on the mountain. It’s not other people’s responsibility to bring water for him. It’s his own responsibility.
I think there is a Seinfeld gif for just about everything.
When I’m hiking, I’ve been known to give water away if I come across someone who needs it, but if it was down to my last drop, I’d have to think about it.
I’ve been in situations where I know that my helping out saved someone from dehydration.
But, untrained people on a hiking trail are a whole lot different that an untrained person on Mt Everest.
You would reward theft?
Even theft from an enemy?
What would Jesus say?
I think Jesus would punch you in the nose for promoting theft.
Does sound like loads of fun, doesn’t it?
I asked people for water and no one gave me any.

Hey. You just melt some snow!
Every year, we see pictures of the crowds on the mountain and in tents waiting. The lines are shorter at Disney. Ridiculous. It’s no longer special that only a few have experienced.
“What would Jesus say?”
Jesus would say that you need to stop worrying so much about the speck in the blogger’s eye and instead worry about the log in yours.
Matthew 7:3-5
I remember that. They took less water for 3 people than I consume before lunch working outside in NM.
The ones that I like are the Texans who start up the La Luz trail in the Sandias in shorts and a t-shirt and get hypothermia in May.
Theres a Seinfeld for that.
There is always a Seinfeld for any topic.
Yetis.
All these hikers are like chum the water for them.
A couple of Yeti attacks and missing hikers and the balance will be reset.
Im amazed how much time humblegunner has to police this gigantic disorganized site for bloggers. Not a lurking day goes by where he isnt spouting off at someone.
Frankly, I dont care either. Big deal.
The money has taken over and Nepal makes an estimated $300 Million a year from this business.
In the process though Everest has/and is being destroyed by pollution, garbage and everything man brings with him.
A beautiful pristine mountain destroyed by tourism and man’s own hypocrisy.
If she brought enough Coke for the Bears this wouldn’t have happened.
What would Brando say?
“This reminds me of that idiot French couple who died at White Sands National Monument a couple years ago”
There is no reason to die there unless you are a complete idiot. It is brutally hot in the summer, bring water a lot. If you get lost the mountains are a point of orientation and you are not then lost. I suspect they did not bring water.
Correct, they set out on a trail with very little water (what they had, they gave to their child who survived). There are signs at the trail head about water (in multiple languages including French). They ignored it all to their death.
Our ping list objective is to find them!
