Thats why the baseball players who you thought were dead show up to play in the Field of Dreams
Scientist: I do not think that word means what they think it means.
The underlying reason for the disparity is not known...
Can’t have anything to do with some of the most powerful and fast and brutal players in the country crashing into each other at mach speeds with the (unstated) desire to inflict as much damage as possible on the opponent they tackle.
Couldn’t be.
“underlying reason for the disparity is not known, and its unclear if it has to do with elements of the sports themselves”
Where is Captain Obvious when you need him.
Since football is a contact sport, that’s not the least bit surprising.
Maybe I am wrong here, but don’t they both have a 100% death rate?
Something tells me that a man weighing 300 pounds will tend to die sooner than a man weighing 180.
What WOULD be surprising is if they both had the exact same mortality rate.
Did they take race into account? More black men in football than baseball and black men have a higher incidence of heart disease.
Higher percentage of black athletes in nfl
Higher contact sport in the nfl
Higher concussuon rate in the nfl
Hardly an equivalent comparison. In common sense times an editor would have shot this ridiculous and embarrassing comparison down before it ever went to press.
There are a lot more of them....
Of course, this probably doesnt include the baseball players that die of boredom every year. That slow pace takes its toll.
I read years ago that if you match by race and year of birth, NFL players are healthier and live longer than non-NFL players.
With the lone exception of offensive linemen having more heart problems than non-NFL'ers.
Have you seen those tubs? They hardly care if they are healthy, they just want immovable mass to protect the qb.
Good point!! I just watched that movie again recently. A classic.
Well, duh!
How about mortality rates per pound?
Even Danny Ainge preferred baseball to basketball until it became clear he was unlikely to last in MLB but that he would be a star in the NBA.
Very funny. However, if you go to national college football or NFL games and sit through the unending national commercial breaks, on top of all the time-outs and delays between downs, you realize that college and NFL football are not ‘constant action’. The last 10 minutes of a college game I went to last year seemed like it lasted an hour.
