Need advice. I have a grandson in law who was discharged from the Army about a year or so ago. He'd spent a year in Korea, and then spent a year in poland. He received extra pay for his time in Poland.

Now, the Army is demanding that extra pay back saying he was never in Poland. His discharge papers say otherwise, and he also has photographs of himself while there.

He protested their error and told them about his papers, and tje woman he spoke with said she didn't care what HIS papers say, the Army says he wasn't there, period!

I suggested he contact the Veterans Affairs, as well as his state Representative.

What would you suggest?

I also wondered it it was a scam and suggested the FBI.

Any ideas?

Go to Veterans’ Affairs immediately with paper work.

Just who from the Army contacted him how, about this? Was it by phone, email, regular mail or in person?

Gosh, the Army lost records. That hardly ever happens.

My boy was a 2Lt. years ago, and there was no record of him ever being vaccinated. He had to get 7 or so inoculations immediately. He almost passed out in the Infirmary. That kid was in tip top shape too.

The stuff usually surfaces eventually, but if he retained copies of his Orders, the problem should be resolved more easily.

Could be a scam. Otherwise, you can call your congressman.

Contact your Congressman or Senator. If they’re not a raving lunatic they might be able to help.

Going to the local VA office might help, but as you mentioned “it might be a scam.” How far is he from a US Army post? A reclaiming of money would come from the Army Finance office at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, IN. If he is not near an Army post, I recommend he find a recruiting office to look at the notice he received. Or visit an Army ROTC detachment if there is one close to where he lives. The fact that he was in Poland being on his DD 214 is official proof that he was in Poland. He should also go through all of his Army papers and hopefully he kept copies of all them and especially his orders to go overseas.

Did he do a “Do It Yourself” move for any of those and submit the proper paperwork?

In this thread, a person covers that oversight and said his senator fixed it.

First of all, you were not specific if he got an email, letter or phone call.

BE SPECIFIC. My cousin is currently serving in Sokor near the DMZ so i have some affinity to your case...

Sounds like something from Catch 22. If the Army says you’re dead, then you’re dead. Live with it.

I would suggest going to the idiot woman’s boss first, showing the evidence. I would expect that would take care of it.

If not, then go to that person’s boss, and keep going higher, eventually there has to be an honest, sensible person in the command chain, who will straighten it all out.

Best wishes.

Veteran’s Affairs or, if you’re not urban, the local VFW commander is always an excellent resource.
