Theres no shortage of anti-vaxxers at FR. I was wondering what their opinion is of taking a vaccine for an old-folks malady?
I got the single shot about 5 years ago. Never had any problems.
I have heard the new version requires a series of 2 shots. Some doctors recommend the new series even for those who got the previous shot. I have not asked my doctor, as I have heard several scare stories of people having bad reactions to the 2-shot series.
I am delaying to see whether a revised/upgraded shot is developed.
I had the latest “two shot” version last year. (The shots must be administered within four months of each other.) After both shots, I had flu-like symptons that lasted about 12 hours. Shingles are a lot worse.
“”an old-folks malady?””
I don’t think it discriminates for age...old/young - no difference. I had it on my face when I was in my 40’s...
I don’t think the pharmacist is even too sure about the new vaccine. She’s the one who told me all the doubts about it. Still not convinced to get it.
I got the Shingrix shot(s). No one who has had shingles recommends the experience. My mother got it in her late 80s. Red area and soreness on my arm after the first shot, less redness with the second shot.
For the poster who never got chicken pox, although usually a mild disease in kids, it can kill adults.
If you get one, there are a couple of newer vaccines that don’t contain aborted baby cells. Anybody getting one up until a few years ago had to get Mercks version and that still uses aborted cells. Not sure what God might think of someone who used that vaccine, knowingly.
My dad had two purple hearts, both courtesy of the Germans from both war 1 and war 2.
He said that shingles was vastly worse than shrapnel.

Not an age thing...I got it when I was 27. Wife got it when 76. Nasty...you don’t want it. Get the shingrix shot.
Had it a couple years ago - no side effects and no shingles so far......
“Go for the vaccine, shingles is awful and takes ages to get through.”
Oh, come on! I had it around the belt line. Lasted two weeks. Thought I had appendicitis. Gut could only handle chicken broth. Lost 9 lbs. Doc prescribed anti-viral and I was done. Great weight loss program. ATP - Not getting the vaccine.
My advice is to ask your provider for a shingles vaccine that do not use neurotoxins like mercury or aluminum and that do not use allergens like eggs or peanut oil.
They can get these vaccines and most providers have them, you just have to ask.
If they insist that the vaccine is safe then ask for the MSDS sheet on it. Then insist on inspecting their hazardous materials response plan for mitigating a spill of the vaccine.
If the plan includes a Class A Hazmat suit then you might not want that sh*t in your body.
And then insist on the vaccine that can be cleaned up with a paper towel.
Shingles isn’t just for old folks, it can strike anytime. I had it at 26 on my face and torso, very painful, lasted several weeks, hope I never have to deal with that again.
I don’t believe Medicare pays 100% of the cost of this injection. You might want to check the Medicare.gov site to check this information.
While I’m a committed naturalist, not everyone is-so I think this is an individual choice-whatever feels right for you-do it...
My parents had us vaccinated for smallpox, DPT and polio-but not as tiny babies-other than that, we got the chickenpox, measles, etc-natural vaccination-caught it from other kids-, and I’ve lived drug-free all my life-so I don’t get vaxxed for the adult stuff, because my body has reacted frighteningly every time I even got a flu vaccine-so I quit that about 15 years ago-I still don’t take drugs, don’t eat proc3essed food-haven’t been ill, either but for a mild cold or flu a couple times-but this natural lifestyle isn’t necessarily going to work for everyone-one size never fits all...
The shingles vax-and some others, also-contain aborted fetal cells-aside from having a moral issue with that, I’m not convinced that putting DNA from a different, unrelated human into someone’s body-at any age-is a good idea...
I hate needles. I’ll take my chances.
Skip the vaccine and just get the anti-virals when you get it. Shingles is a fricking JOKE. It’s level 4 pain!
I lived 3.5 years with level 8-10 pain from an Army LOD back injury. You know what that’s like? Lemme tell you. Delerium, vomiting lime-green jello mix (stomach bile) every 45 mins until after 2 days you pass out. Then a day later you wake up and start all over. Do 3.5 years of that then get back to me about level 4 shingles k?
Got one a few years ago. No adverse affect.
“If you never had chicken pox, you dont have to worry about shingles...”
I don’t think you know how this works
I'm 74 and never came down with cp, but I got my shingles shot a couple of years ago. The way it was explained to me at the time was that the medical community had decided that folks over a certain age (60?) had most likely been exposed to the disease and had probably contracted an unnoticible case. So just because I had not come down with a full fledged case as my kid sister had, I was better off getting the vaccine.
BTW, before they had the vaccine my sister came down with shingles...not fun.
My only after effect from the shot is that I'm dead.
“I hate needles. Ill take my chances.”
Because they hurt? Shingles hurt a lot more
