The 6.5 Grendel cartridge may be one of the most versatile round for the intermediate ranges used in target shooting and hunting. This isnt your .223/5.56 Nato round for your AR. If youre looking for accuracy and knockdown power out to 600 yards with your AR, this is the cartridge to go with. In order to use the 6.5 Grendel you need to change out the uppers of the AR.
6.5 Grendel Info
This upper is getting more popular, which is why factory ammunitions are making the 6.5 Grendel more available for anyone that wants to push it out to the limit.
The 6.5 Grendel caliber was created to combine the power of the 7.62 and the Ballistic Coefficient (flat trajectory) of the 5.56 NATO round. These upgraded rounds will improve the range of your AR, reduces recoil and a flat trajectory over long distances.
Whats cool about AR's is that you don't need to buy a new rifle to shoot the 6.5 Grendel. Just change your upper to fit the 6.5 Grendel. Switching it out is a breeze. Plus no FFL paperwork to be hassled with.
The cost and weight of the 6.5 Grendel round is cheaper/lighter than a .308 round. If you want to shoot more than go with the 6.5 Grendel. Speaking of price, be prepare to fork out anywhere from $350 to $500 for the Grendel.
Here are some 6.5 Grendel upper features to consider when choosing one.
Forged Most upper receiver from manufacturers are either forged, machined or cast. The standard is a forged upper receiver. Forged metal retains more strength than other types.
Customization Friendly Choose an upper that you can switch out barrels and have space for your optics. Most upper comes with a barrel and a handguard. This combo can save you money.
Forward Assist - This was something that I had taken for granted while in the military. Now as a Joe citizen, having forward assist on your AR is good to have for cycling malfunctions. For these precision shooting at 400 to 600 yards get yourself a 16" or 20" barrel with these uppers. Read the rest of 6.5 Grendel upper.
6.5 Grendel was a great idea.
However, it has competition and anyone looking to add more power to their AR without going to a 7.62 have a range of choices.
If you want to shoot more than go..

Quickly becomes a boat anchor if the SHTF! Oddball ammo.
THIS!
Unless you take the appropriate steps in stocking up now!
I went with two 6.8spc’s with a ‘wilson combat’ pencil barrel for hunting deer/antelope with my kids.
Best hunting combination in the world for kids. Accurate, lethal to 300yrds, lightweight, adjustable stock length, quick follow up shots.
I could not be happier!!! At 12yrs, my daughter got an antelope, and my son bagged a 4pt buck.
Great for hog hunting. You can use a Hornady 120 grain round. Great knockdown.
I have a Smith and Wesson upper for my AR-15 in .300 Blackout that has similiar ballistics as this round but won’t cycle reliably with any bullet over 125 grain and seems to only work with 110 or 125 grain ammo.. Sometimes it won’t cycle those reliably either. Maybe I just need to clean it every time I shoot it or maybe its the upper itself. Would like to have one of these but am reluctant to buy and invest in ammo if I were to have similiar problems.
The title “Grendel uppers” sounded like it was about a drug of some type.
If it will not cycle with the block wide open, the barrel gas port likely needs to be slightly larger. Had a cycling problem on a .308 AR, turned out there was a metal burr in the gas port blocking some of the gas flow.
Clearing the port and tuning the adjustable block turned it into a soft recoiling pussycat.
Ok, I will check into that . Thanks for the advice!
