The DUP smash up their agreement with Theresa May and are headed for isolation
Slugger O'Toole ^ | 3/22/19 | Brian walker

The DUP’s Westminster leader Nigel Dodds has denounced Mrs May’s entire approach in a statement that all but guarantees her deal will not pass next week. The outcome of yesterday’s EU summit seems to have been the last straw. The DUP rejection also casts severe doubt on whether the confidence and supply arrangement that gave her a working majority can survive, at least under her leadership and without a hard Brexit prime minister succeeding her and able to deliver it.

It may be that as the government casts around for an alternative to her deal, they are implicitly withdrawing from the DUP deal anyway. None of the suggested alternatives disposes of the backstop because the withdrawal agreement would survive, being eligible for replacement only in the next stage of negotiations for the final relationship. As the threat of No Deal by whatever name recedes, so it seems do the DUP’s terms for agreement and their leverage in Parliament...

Wisdom.

Hard Brexit. Got a nice ring to it.

The globalists. What couldn’t be done by force of arms was attempted through economic enslavement and mercantilism.

That’s how an honest history book will list it.

Hard Brexit.

I prefer the term: Clean Brexit.

It would seem Mrs May will end up in recorded history under the heading of speedbumps.

Irish politics is split four ways, which is probably a more realistic composition than the three way split we have in the US - Repub, Dem, and the ever so nebulous “moderate”.

First realize, they are ALL commies. The division is based on whether or not northern ireland should be part of ireland or the UK.

On the “irish side” you have “Republicans” like Sinn Fein. Then the moderate “Nationalists” like the SDLP -social democratic labour party. On the “uk side” you have the moderate “unionist” DUP - democratic unionist party and then finally the “Loyalist” which is currently kind of fractured among various groups.

I had no idea Ireland’s politics was so complex.

I won’t lie.

I’m not even sure of their status in regard to the UK.

Ireland is independent country. Northern Ireland is part of UK. Ireland will remain in EU. Hence the upsets as they don’t want a “hard” border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. It reminds them of the terrorism filled 70s when they had guard posts at the border.

Basically, 6 counties in the north. 26 in the south.

What I called “irish” politics is actually that of Northern Ireland (UK).

So right now it’s an “open” border there. It won’t be after Brexit, with no “deal” that is.

Hence the article about the DUP freaking out. DUP is the most popular party now for northern ireland, based on number of seats in parliament.

I knew NONE of that.

Had no idea there was an Ireland and a Northern Ireland and the north belonged to the UK.

So even in the 70s and 80s not ALL of Ireland was under British rule?

Correct. Revolutionary activity led to independence from UK for the lower 26 counties as ireland in 20s. UK kept the north as part of the “Treaty” that settled that (Winston Churchill minor character in that affair BTW).

Thanks to that separation of the north, there was almost immediately an irish civil war. That ended with no change, ie. the treaty remained in effect.

Brits had been running ireland for hundreds of years.

Wow.

I thought all of Ireland was under British control.

I assume there was a lot of violence before the split too though. But that’s just a guess.

What are you talking about? The EU is saying “Go. You, UK, asked to leave on March 29, 2019. You asked for this two years ago!!!”

“What? You, the UK didn’t have any plan? You knew that leaving the EU means you lose the benefits, right? And you knew that you had signed a deal , given your word of honor as a country to keep the NI RoI border open and now you want to go back on your word? No, we as a club stick together and support our smaller members like Ireland.”

“Oh, you now want to extend the date when you leave? Why? What difference will the delay make? If you want to delay we will only allow until May 7th because after that are EU parliament elections and if you still are in the EU you must hold elections and you need to stay another five years, the duration of the parliament. Decide niw, stay or go. In fact the majority of us want you to go now. Please go on the 29th as YOU asked for two years ago”

As I said above, what do you mean? The EU is saying go and the UK is begging for an extension to stay longer. The delay is the UK’s fault only

What concession do you think they can offer? The EU was not willing to throw Ireland under the bus to keep Theresa May happy. What concession do you expect?
