You can use your porcelain coffee cup as an easily available knife sharpener. This video explains how to sharpen your knives using the coffee cups. They actually work quite well. Also very convenient to use when you are camping or away from your home and need a knife sharpener.
I wish I had seen this a week ago, before I dropped $50.00 on Amazon for sharpening stones, strops etc.
I remember my Mother touching up the edge of a knife on the bottom of a porcelain bowl.
Of course you need to have a knife already sharpened. Then after using it a while you can restore the edge. Maybe even improve the edge but still it needs to have an edge on it originally.
Neat trick.
What’s good about this is it’s QUICK. Sometimes I find myself doing simple cutting tasks such as slicing onions which become tougher because of a dull knife edge. Well, I just reach out, turn a coffee cup over, and VOILA, a nice sharp knife within seconds that makes my cutting so much easier.
Pfft!!!
Nothing was finer than the Combination General Electric Electric Can Opener & Knife Sharpener (Avocado Green). Also secondary functions as kitty-cat attractor.
Why not just use a steel? They come with every quality knife set.
I just sharpened a large knife on the bottom of a crock pot. It worked very well.

Had one!!
I’m reporting you to OSHA! You failed to issue the mandatory government-required safety lecture. I bet you weren’t even wearing safety glasses. Purple will be slicing things off their bodies.
Seriously though, I’m trying this today. I had an electric knife sharpener in my Amazon basket just yesterday...but deleted it because I didn’t want to spend the money. I am ALWAYS looking for a good way to sharpen my blades.
I take that as an ENDORSEMENT of the coffee cup knife sharpening method.
When the klystron in our radar sets went TU, someone would take them home for sharpening knives.

If a knife sharpener wasn’t available.
I always sharpen my knife on the finger bowls when I go camping.
Did I say over 500? Well, in just a few minutes it continued surging and is now at 538.
Weird. This might be my most popular video of them all and yet I posted it pretty much as an aferthought today due to the fact I need to use this technique to sharpen a knife for cutting an onion for breakfast.
One of the crystal sherrys will do in a pinch.
A steel maintains the knife edge. As one cuts, like a meat cutter against a poly top,the edge “balls.” The steel straightens it out and all good steels are magnetic. I have yet to see a TV chef use a steel correctly. Even Ramsey doesn’t have it down right. Every morning I would sharpen my knives on a three way oil stone I used mineral oil on it,starting with the coarse stone and work up to the finest. I’m retired now but still have all my meat cutting knives. I still have my 10 inch Forschner that I bought in 1975.
