The Ugly Secret of Woke Capitalism
Kaus File ^ | January 31, 2019 | Mickey Kaus

Here’s what’s truly alarming about the apparent success of Nike’s “woke” Kaepernick ad campaign, now emulated by Gillette. It’s not that businesses have discovered they can make money, not by appealing to all customers, but rather by taking explicit political stands that only some customers love. It’s not even that these political stands, so far, seem to be overwhelmingly “progressive.” It’s that — well, Scott Galloway of ReCode’s “Pivot” hit the sore spot when he said the key motivating factor in this trend is that

“progressives are capturing the majority of the income”

You might expect politicized advertising to split the country in two, along familiar blue/red, lines. Progressives would have their ads and deplorables would have theirs. But you would be wrong. The two sides in the politicized commerce fight aren’t equal. Trump may have won the Electoral College and come close in the popular vote — but the Resistance seems to be decisively winning the money competition (something anti-Trumpers obnoxiously advertised after the election with boasts about how Hillary voters came from the economically most dynamic parts of America, i.e. the knowledge industries on the coasts).

The assertion of the article only works if you ignore evidence to the contrary. The truth is best expressed as

- Get woke, go broke

I’ve thought that one group of people is going to buy the best product for their priorities (purchase based on cost, quality, performance, durability, etc)

Another group is going to buy the product that makes them feel best (purchase based on status, emotion, environmental issues, etc)

Marketing doesn’t have a high payoff for the first group - you need to improve the product to increase market share with them. But marketing is huge for the second. Progressives make a big percentage of the second so the marketing should be based on emotions that appeal to progressives to get the best ROI.

Possible. But I have a high net worth and income. And I will NEVER buy from these sellouts. I doubt I am alone here.

“progressives are capturing the majority of the income”

Layoffs at HuffPo.

Layoffs at BuzzFeed.

Layoffs at NYT.

Layoffs at Gannett.

Yeah, progressives are capturing the majority of the income.

yea... well, let’s wait and see.

I used Gillette razors for 40 years. Not anymore.
I purchased Schick razors for myself, and three of my friends. They ALL loved getting them.

I got a large pack of store-brand disposable razors at BJ’s wholesale club. Screw all the “brand name” companies and their “woke” marketing.

It seems to me a lot of this “woke” advertising is aimed at the nouveau riche (spelling? - it’s been a long time since high school French) - those who are just coming into bunches of money - kids in and just coming out of college, women, blacks (you’d think this country was seventy-five percent black to watch most of the commercials on Philly local TV) - advertisers trying to win the allegiance of those who up to this point haven’t had a lot of money to spend on their products......

I hear your point. The down side of taking a position on ... well just about anything, is that there is always a counter consumer. If that group is larger than the first, then adopting a position that is offensive, maybe even hostile to the counter group will LIKELY cause a loss in sales.

JC Penney for example. By making a gay friendly advertisement, they pissed off the family oriented consumer and sales suffered.

It would appear to me that Gillette is following the same ill advised path.

Not a bad idea... some of these disposable razors are pretty darn good now. Might even be cheaper. I need to do the math.

“you’d think this country was seventy-five percent black to watch most of the commercials on Philly local TV”

An alien watching network television and commercials would believe almost half of couples are inter-racial and over ten percent are same sex homosexual. I love the DC superheroes but had to stop watching their television shows because the agenda they are trying to shove down our throats makes me physically ill. Keep it to yourselves and just tell the stories!

Mmm I should clarify. These people can do whatever as free Americans. I’m saying they have no business using their business and positions to push sinfulness (as homosexuality was described to me all those years of Bible Schooling). And sermons. They do not.
