She just left, she got very heated and angry with me. We were debating the state of the economy and the effects on minorities and she started spewing vile curse words and invective on Christmas Day.
Wow. Threw the Christmas cake on the ground. She's 35-years old, works in finance in Morristown, NJ and New York City.
I'm perplexed this holiday season. Now, I just want to stay home and just watch TV or something. Should I bring them over again?

Cut our lib lovin’ relatives off at the path yesterday when they called to make sure I was doing all the cooking as usual. Nope, sorry, not doing it. They had to make other plans. It’s so nice just doing nothing in my robe and fuzzy slippers. Dinner will be a small chicken pot pie just our size thrown together from whatever is in the fridge.
You should keep up the family traditions, in spite of the irrational mania of Trump Haters. Let them know you’re there if they ever need someone to turn to if they withdraw from the dark side.

My family lived in Convent Station, just outside of Morristown. I moved from there to Hillsborough (south of Somerville), and commuted into Midtown Manhattan everyday, on Amtrak or Conrail.
Must be something in that NJ water...

I have 1 uber liberal friend. We are still friends because I have forbidden the talk of politics between us. I flat out told her....if you want to be my friend then we cannot talk politics. She is 81 and invited me over for Bailey’s and coffee with her and her husband day before yesterday. Another 85 year old neighbor was there. The 4 of us had a nice visit about family, books, shows on tv we were binging. etc.
It can be done but the rules have to be set.
Oddly, Trump did very well with black and Hispanic males. Better that previous Republicans
indeed. everyone knows that some topics are best left alone at holiday gatherings. Christmas is about family, not politics.

Debates with guests are a huge mistake. They are guests and end up feeling obligated to listen or leave. They do the former for too long until the latter pops as the only option. So, in the future, as the host, keep debates at bay and never start it yourself.
All that being said, the next move is her’s and not yours. If she over reacted, it is up to her to make a re-approach and try to make amends. As you had a role in it (starting a debate or allowing it with a captive audience) you may be fulsome repairing the relationship once she starts such repair.
Before making any decision about getting together again, have a long talk (not about the validity of your two positions) about what needs to be undiscussed for you both to keep relationships cordial and caring.
Like many leftists, she may not be able to understand that her view of the world is not the only proper view. Take your time repairing this — give it some thought.
