The Happy Holidays greeting makes no sense.
If I greet someone by saying Merry Christmas, I am saying that I wish them to be merry on one specific day of the year, December 25th. That day is officially named Christmas by the federal government of the U. S.
But if I take the politically correct route, and wish someone Happy Holidays, then I've confused everyone present, whether they realize it or not.
First, there is no day of the year that is officially named Holidays by any government anywhere. So, nobody knows which day I am wishing them to be happy.
Second, each person I might be greeting celebrates, or observes, one holiday only. And many people would object to being wished happiness on a day celebrated by a competing religion or philosophy.
For example, some people who celebrate a Muslim holiday would object to being wished happiness on Christmas or Chanukkah. Other people, who celebrate a holiday for a religious offshoot of Christianity might object to be wished happiness on a Muslim holiday or a Jewish holiday.
But here I am wishing everyone to be happy on ALL of the seasonal holidays, thereby offending many who don't even realize they've been offended.
There is also proof, through the behavior of many advocates of the Happy Holidays greeting. Notice that none, or almost none, of them, greet people with Happy Holidays AFTER December 25th. Hmmmm. What about those seasonal religious holidays that occur after December 25th? Are they chopped liver?
What that really means is that those Happy Holidays advocates don't really wish anyone were happy on the non-Christmas holidays. They only want to avoid wishing anyone to be happy on Christmas Day, December 25th.
And now, after offending a lot of people with this vanity, I am going to go off and be happy not only on Christmas, but on Christmas Eve as well. LOL.
really?!
my niece (in law!!) was always “offended” at Christmas- no Santa, no Jesus, even snowmen pissed her off. a crackpot if you’ve never met one.
i have always wanted to tell her to go “blank” herself, and then ask, what was more offensive? LOL.
It’s not about being nice. It’s about being AWARE. It’s a big complicated world out there with lots of people and lots of religions and lots of holidays even within single religions. The fact is “happy holidays” dates back to the mid 1800s, is not anti-Christian, it’s just another phrase people use.
I try to be tolerant, because some people are clearly conflicted about what to say and don't want to "offend" someone. They aren't bad people or "anti-Christmas zealots", but are people who are just cowed by the PC-crowd and let it affect them.
I have always liked Dennis Prager's view on this (He is Jewish, and he thinks the forcing of people to say "Happy Holidays"...He says OF COURSE it is a "War on Christmas"):
What are they going to do next year when Hanukkah bridges Dec. 25th. (Hanukkah runs Dec. 22 through Dec. 30th next year).
Why give a retail person a hard time? It’s the Christian way.
LOL.
I’m sure many are glad you’re here to teach us what the right behavior is in every situation.
And LOLing at you for thinking I was calling you nice.
What’s your view on wishing one another Happy New Year instead of Merry Christmas during the heart of the 12 days of the Christmas Season?
Fine with me.
You’re the one trying to tell everybody how to handle things. I’m just pointing out that you’re full of crap.
I didnt tell anyone what to do. I told them, and you, what I do or dont do.
You keeping reading what I didnt write.
you said it doesn’t make sense. That’s clearly telling people not to use it. Now you’re lying. So not only are you stupid, you’re a liar.
“Now youre lying. So not only are you stupid, youre a liar.”

I guess the Christmas spirit hasn’t caught up with you yet.
.
Got plenty of Christmas spirit. But liars get none of it.
Saying it doesnt make sense is me expressing my opinion. If you want to believe expressing my opinion of the illogic of a statement is telling people what to do, your illogic is on you, not me.
And your ad hominem attacks are silly and non-productive.
thereby offending many who don’t even realize they’ve been offended... then I’ve confused everyone present, whether they realize it or not.
No, I was critiquing my writing and communications skills, not others.
Contrary to what the lying liar, Richard Dawkins, says, this is indeed a specific Marxist assault on Biblical Christianity.
Happy Holidays, a generic Holy-Day greeting, has replaced a specific one, Merry Christmas.
Similarly, BCE/CE, a generic timeline demarcation, has replaced a specific one, BC/AD.
Note well: In both instances, the secular Marxists who inflicted this upon American society did not replace either the actual holiday season or the timeline dates!
The so-called holiday season still coincides with the long-chosen time for Christians to celebrate Christmas [Christ Mass]; all dates in use still follow the timeline originated by Dennis the Little, who sought to determine the time of Christ’s birth so that the church calendar could predict all future Easter celebrations - which holy day, the time of the Death and Resurrection of the Christ, was considered the actual focus of Christendom, not the birth of the Savior.
(Dennis was somewhat in error because he was limited by using Roman Numerals, without the advantage of the Zero.)
Note also: None of these Marxists are attempting to replace Ramadan with something generic. That alone disproves Dawkins’ sophistic argument that this is all about not offending people of other faiths (or of no faiths).
I would like to see him go to a Muslim-dominant nation and try to preach his condescending sophistry.
P.S.
Their not changing anything is typical leftism at work: subvert rather than create.
In other words: steal others’ works and stick your name on it.
