Wait, what?
The U.S. Postal Service announced on Monday that it will suspend most of its services on Wednesday in honor of the late former President, George H.W. Bush.
I wonder if anybody has informed Amazon that their contract with the USPS is suspended for one day in the middle of their busiest month? And what ever happened to neither rain, nor sleet nor snow nor gloom of night stays these carriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds ?
I know, I know: President George H. W. Bush passed away age 94, but seriously? Theyre shutting down the post office - In December in his honor? Its not like its John Kasich for goodness sake.
I suppose this is President Trumps fault for issuing a proclamation of a national day of mourning. Im guessing he thought theyd just lower the flags to half staff and carry on. Oh well, I suppose its good practice for later this month when we have to close the rest of the government down in order to secure funding for the wall.
In the meanwhile, everyone hold on: its only for one day. And odds are good if youre shipping something that absolutely, positively has to be there overnight you arent using the USPS anyway.

That motto or phrase is actually very old.
It was used by Herodotus in his “History of the Persian Wars” to describe the messengers of the King of Persia.
Is there anything that honors GHWB more than an inexplicable and arbitrary change of policy on national scope, with no popular support whatsoever, that negatively affects huge swaths of the population and has all the costs borne by the public?
Call Vargas!
I doubt anyone will notice.
Bitch about loosing money and for no good reason give all employees a paid day off.
Sounds about right.
This does not honor the former president.
The politicians are not kings and queens.
They just think they are.
The difference between Trump and Bush is Trump would turn over in his grave if he thought people were taking a day off from work to honor him.
My mail got delivered at 7:45 PM yesterday. Usual delivery time is between noon and 2 PM
Excellent. (Too long fo a tagline, though...)
My wife’s business operates with the shippers daily. Each of them.
I’ll rank them for you in our experience (NE PA, always precipitating and we have some rough, rural roads with lots of driveways with individual boxes)
Performance (not bashing the hell out of our boxes, getting here relatively on time and not keeping our stuff on the truck accidentally)
1> USPS
2) UPS
3) FEDEX who has numerously just called it quits with our stuff on the truck. Last week they did it for 3 days in a row.
4) Fedex Express. Did you know that these are routinely considered two different orgs ?
5) DHL because I haven’t seen a DHL truck in a while. They probably need to jumpstart their vans everytime a package comes in.
Cost?
1) The USPS. Hands down. If you examine their costs and compare to Fedex I have no clue how fedex does it.
2) USPS
3) Fedex
4) Fedex express
5) DHL is still out there but you’d think you’re paying for the whole overnight flight. I am thinking of ways to compete against only DHL because I actually think I could do a better job for less money.
These metrics are important because at today’s prices for goods the shipper and the government are clearly making more money on the deal than the seller. My wife is the seller. Between Ebay, Paypal and Shipping they take 50% of the buyer’s money right off the bat.
Bet Amazon isn’t shutting down.
In this day and age...direct deposits, auto-bankdraft, online transfers, charge card payments, the internet...no one should be complaining about the USPS shutting down for a day...except to hear themselves whine. Really, is it a surprise the USPS is poorly run and blows thru money in wasteful ways? No. They were a lousy organization last week, they’re a lousy organization today...they’ll be a lousy organization next week.
This is a non-issue.
Financial Markets are closed
DHL may be concentrating on international these days and dont care about the small local guy
Most, not all. I suspect what's really going on is they are going to spend the day exclusively delivering Amazon packages. Amazon has a contract with USPS for Sunday/holiday delivery, and making it a holiday would trigger that part of the contract.
Two weeks ago, I waited 4 days for an overnight package.
Every time I get a package, it’s ALWAYS an Easter Egg hunt to find it. Under the car? Behind the garbage can? On the lawn mower? On the porch or in the garage or in the yard or in the road? On top of the mailbox or inside the mailbox? At the neighbors or just not here?
Hey, y’all be careful. Even out here in the country there are package thieves. Yesterday, we saw a rental truck with lots of packages in the front seat following the UPS guy.
