Pentagon Mulls Buying 2 Ford-Class Supercarriers at Once (Kennedy and Enterprise)

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is continuing to evaluate a proposal put forward by the U.S. Navy to procure two nuclear-powered Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers under one contract as a cost- and time-saving measure.

“We are conducting an evaluation to ensure we have the warfighting capabilities to compete and win,” U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan was quoted as saying by Bloomberg News on October 19. “Any decision will factor in strengthening the industrial base and delivering best value for taxpayers.”

While U.S. Congress approved the block procurement in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, U.S. ship maker Huntington Ingalls Industries – Newport News Shipbuilding (HII-NNS), the Ford-class’ builder, has far failed to meet the U.S. Navy’s cost-cutting requirements. According to one U.S. Navy estimate, the service would save around $2.5 billion with a single buy....

LOL, it will need twice the number of tugs to pull it along, and planes or subs attacking it won’t need sensors, they can just look for the pall of black smoke issuing forth!

I don’t believe he was an aviator. But he did serve, with great distinction, and was nearly lost over the side during the typhoon.

He fought those fires in the hangar bay of the USS Monterrey, and those fires were so bad that one passing ship in Typhoon Cobra, seeing her in flames from stem to stern was heard to say over TBS: “Well, there goes Monterrey...”

Ford was not a great president, but he was there at a difficult time, and he did serve in WWII, and served well.

He has my respect, even if I can criticize him as a politician.

Yes. That episode where he nearly went over the side was hair-raising to read. It made me think of a guy sliding down an ice slope on a mountain, flailing wildly with his ice axe and crampons, anything to stop.

Ford hit that low metal rail with his feet, flipped and caught the railing.

Just damn. Then, he went and fought the fires, IIRC.

I like USS Saratoga too. I am, as you know, a traditionalist in these things!

“They are useful in fights against tiny weak countries but otherwise way more vulnerable than they are useful.”

Ummm, and which big powerful country messes with our carriers? They project our ability, and you engage it at your peril.

There is a lot more bang behind that ship, should you attempt to engage it. It’s that old adage about being able to back it up.

We can back it up just fine.

I wish they'd stop naming capital ships after presidents. They should be named after historically important ships or major naval battles. History sand tradition are important to the troops.
