Just minutes ago, in the middle of a rambling and semi-incoherent self-justification on the Senate floor, Lisa Murkowski announced that she was Montana Senator Steve Dainess Plan B.
Daines, as I posted earlier today, was scheduled to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding tomorrow. I have to admit I respect a man who has his priorities straight. In the comments wed speculated on who might step aside on the No side of the equation. My guess was Jon Tester would do it as hes in a tough race, hes a no vote on Kavanaugh, and stepping aside could let him keep his no vote while building some goodwill with Montana voters.
As it turns out, Lisa Murkowski will fill that slot.

Breaking: Murkowski will cast a present vote in the final tally as a courtesy to Senator Daines, who will not be present due to his to daughters wedding. It will not change the outcome of the vote, she says. I hope it reminds us we can take very small steps to be gracious.

One can hope.
The ties that bind us as a nation have become dangerously frayed and the desperate attempt by Senate Democrats to scuttle Brett Kavanaughs nomination burned down a lot of trust on the Judiciary Committee where trust is all important. Hopefully, despite Murkowskis preening, her collegiality and decency on this small issue will take root. But Im not betting on it.

She is both a pompous twit AND a bad person. Not mutually exclusive in any way in this instance.
Murkowski sure gives the Mom in tennis shoes a run for the money as to the lowest IQ in the Senate. What a fool.
They spelled twit wrong.
RedState pffffffffffffffffft
LOL!
Mitch made her do this to assure the Senate could vote on Kav.
If Murk didn’t pair her vote the Senate couldn’t vote if the Dems all walked out.
There wouldn’t be a quorum- the Constitution requires 51 Senators for a quorum.
And, even if Daines was there, Murk could walk out with the Dems and the vote couldn’t take place.
It’s a “no shenanigans” deal.

Sorry, she most definitely IS a bad person...a VERY bad person.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Let me know when the Winning Aye Vote is cast.
Not sure that's correct.
Especially since there weren't that many Senators when the constitution was written
The idiots in Alaska back this weak azz seantor? How the hell did Palin get elected governor back in the day? Shes pond scum.
You’re right about the 51, though
It’s just that it a quorum is decided by Senate Rules
I don’t trust any of them. Stick with the plan that Daines flies in to vote. Don’t tell Murkowski.
Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members, and a Majority of each shall constitute a Quorum to do Business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel
No, the Constitution set a quorum.
Staes were leary of letting the Senate set it’s own.
Pretty sure a discussion is in Madison’e Notes on the convention.
Her Chairmanship of the Energy committee should end. Send her to a broom closet with one Native American staff.
It’s absolutely insane to have the confirmation rest on Murkowski keeping her word.
What if she changes her mind and votes no?
Senators can be physically forced to be present in the Senate. Its happened before.
Shes playing the safest, mushy middle there is in trying to equally spread the fragments of the bone just enough to placate all sides at least in her mind all the while not impressing anyone.
Mitch made Murkowski an offer she couldn’t refuse.
Yeah, that’s just the kind of thing Mitch wants to avoid.
(Though I’d enjoy seeing Schumer hauled in in handcuffs, some people might find it off-putting).
bingo.
nice explanation here:

The RATs walk out, they can be compelled back in. Course, they have to be found, first.
