DAVENPORT, Iowa - Controversial testimony at the nation's capitol is getting some reaction here at home.
A local mental health counselor says she's seen the impact of the hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
Miriam Prichard says it took an emotional toll on her and some of her patients.
She says hearing the testimony from survivors can be traumatizing for other survivors.
Prichard teamed up with a Davenport church so people could reflect in a quiet space.
"What I've seen from survivors this past week is that people are just tired because they hear these stories and they hear people doubting Dr. Blasey Ford's story, they feel like they're being doubted all over again," Prichard says.
She says social media can also make it even more difficult to disconnect from tough topics.
"You want to stay informed because it's an important issue and you also want to protect yourself. And I think too many times, we go overboard with the being informed part and I think it's important to step back and say, 'Okay, if I watch one more interview or read one more post about this, is that really going to help me?" says Prichard.
Prichard says she plans to hold more safe space events this year.
That includes the day of the confirmation vote as well as the day after elections.

There’s been a complaint that one side is taking the position “guilty unless proven innocent”. That’s actually the minority view on the Democrat side. The majority view is “guilty, even if proven innocent”. Innocent until proven guilty? Fuggedaboutit.

Someone who experienced the Holocaust firsthand, and lived to tell, is a survivor.
Some spoiled whiny lib in Iowa who had a sour romance is not a "survivor".
I hope that never happens. Unfortunately I worry that more might happen.
These people are deranged. They have been entitled their entire lives and are unable to deal with losing. They are capable of anything.
My wife experienced abuse and tells me she thinks what Ford says happened is not abuse. Also, it’s in the past and should not control her life anymore.
Her experience was over 40 years ago. She knows where it happened, who was there, and when it happened.

Ford is not a survivor. We are the survivor.
Wouldn’t it be easier for her to tell her patients how to turn their TVs on and off?
