Occasional Birdy Thread Q4 '18(In memory of Swampsniper)
October 2, 2018 | Self

Posted on 10/02/2018 6:50:46 PM PDT by Chipper

Going to start this back up, with permission from Islander7. Posts, comments and stories for the birders/birdwatchers/twitchers on FR. Post and share.

I was walking through a small sanctuary in my county, when I had two Barred Owls paying very close attention to me. I happened to look straight up over my left shoulder and saw why. _91A0153-2

Then on the other side of the tree I saw another reason why. One of the best birding experiences I have had. _91A0250

This picture I had Mallard drake come by the dock I was on and got some decent pictures of. Shortly after it passed by I hear quite the commotion. Two Mallard drakes started to fight behind me. I started snapping pics and didn't even realize until about 1/2 through there was a third Mallard under the pile. Unbeknownst to me a pair were in the middle engaging in Springtime activities, and the second drake wasn't taking kindly to that. I did a gif that compiles all the pics I took (will take a little while to load). There are times where the two bottom ducks were completely submerged. _91A8054.jpg

Loved those SWAMPSNIPER threads. We had a lot of fun talking about film cameras, too. Hey, I can’t see the wings on that hummingbird. What sort of shutter speed must it take to stop or even see those wings... And how much light!?
Great post. Thank you!

I used to live in Florida and did photography of nesting birds at the St Augustine Alligator Farm where Swampsniper also did photography. I have Colorado wildlife photos on my home page. I need to get a slide scanner to be able to post some of my bird photos.

Thanks for the ping. I spend 3 or 4 hours a day watching the birds at my feeding station that consists of 8’X10” dog kennel with a chainlink top because we live in Black Bear country here on Humboldt Bay on the north coast of California. Saw a male Downy Woodpecker just before I came in the house this evening...

Hello Fancy meeting you here. Not sure why but thought of him the other day and was remembering his last few posts. I always enjoyed them.

Not sure if I’m on the birdy ping list, but please add me if I’m not.

Great photos, chipper! I saw a new bird for me this summer, the yellow billed cuckoo. If I can figure out how to post a pic of him, I’ll add it. I think he’s still hanging around in my woods. I haven’t had many migration sightings as I had hoped for this year. Maybe I’ve been too distracted.

Thanks for the thread! Just a few days ago Swampsnipers name came up on the Monthly cooking thread. Heard some sandhill cranes flying low over our house headed back north. And we saw an evening grosbeak at the feeder the other day, not common in west Michigan (near Grand Rapids). Rescued a white breasted nuthatch the other day, just a little shock from hitting the slider. Hummers gone :(.
