Homeless Veteran Back on Street After Fundraisers Keep Money
Breitbart - Big Government ^ | 8-24-2018 | Nate Church

Johnny Bobbitt is back under a bridge just months after a couple raised $400,000 for him — and then reportedly kept it.

It seemed like an American Cinderella story: when New Jersey resident Kate McClure ran out of gas in a “sketchy” neighborhood in Philadelphia, 35-year-old homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt offered her his last $20 dollars for gas, which he went and fetched for her himself.

McClure and her boyfriend Mark D’Amico respondedraised more than $400,000 in Bobbitt’s name. This, however, is where the story gets ugly.

(snip) ...The couple claims to have already spent half the money on him in that time — but their story does not seem to check out.

Rather than putting the money into trusts, as was explicitly stated, the remaining $200,000 is held in one of D’Amico’s savings accounts. While Bobbitt lives under a bridge, McClure has purchased a new BMW and taken vacations to California, Florida, and Las Vegas — all, she claims, on the salary of a receptionist for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

D’Amico has admitted to spending some of the money raised for Bobbitt to gamble but insists he paid it right back to the account. McClure and D’Amico bought Bobbitt a vehicle but kept it in their names so he could not sell it; however, they have since sold the vehicle themselves.

(snip)

D’Amico is unconcerned with the public reception to his and his girlfriend’s actions. “Write what you want,” he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Giving him all that money, it’s never going to happen. I’ll burn it in front of him,” he added.

Q: How much drugs will a active drug abuser take?

A: All of them.

I thought at the time this was a stupid story. I hate these pop-up viral charitable campaigns because they are, almost always, ineffective at best.

There is a good story, a feel good hook, and people use it to raise money. But even with good intentions, without a plan, there is very little chance that the money raised will have any positive effect.

The money does make the people who donated feel better about themselves, so I guess that's something!

And then there's the whole GoFundMe US Tax phenomenon that seems to lack accountability when it comes to raising money for some cause and then spending it how you wish.

There. Fixed it.

“Only a dumbass would voluntarily give money to someone named D’amico from New Jersey.”

You’ve got a point...

Well, these two don’t have a legion of lawyers and accountants on the retainer list to achieve the Clintons’ level.

Most of the people, esp. young people, have no idea how to set up trust funds (that’s why they consulted a financial advisor) and how to keep the book (separate from their own money), they didn’t consult a lawyer thinking they can do it themselves.

That’s where the icky-ness comes in.

“What a racket, GoFundMe. I wish I had thought of it.”

It’s not too late. You can catch cancer tonight and have 500,000 in medical bills by tomorrow morning! Six kids and an ailing mother will help.

I see people like this in movies and on TV and always think they’re exaggerated. WRONGO!!! They’ll be hearing from the DA shortly.

Yep, today’s homeless are not the cast of ‘Grapes of Wrath’ but more often the ‘Wrath of the Grapes or the Poppy’.

There’s a growing suspicion that all three of these people are in on a massive scam.

I agree, that is the problem, nobody donated to D’Amico so he can buy a BMW, go on vacations and have 200K+ kicking around in his bank account, if that was the go fund me, nobody would have donated.

So people donated to a fake cause. Because the money was never used on the vet, or a very small amount of it. With 400K, D’Amico could have sent him to rehab for 6 months, a real one, not a fake TV one that are more like resorts then rehab. And have money left to put in a trust that pays his rent in an apartment for 10 years or so and maybe 5 grand a year in cash payout till depleted.
